BONOBO CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

Programs
Program 1 [2020]
The Bonobo Peace Forest: an integrated network of community-managed forest reserves and concessions, spanning a vast area of rainforest habitat. Includes two nationally gazetted nature reserves: Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve and Sankuru Nature Reserve, together spanning almost 9 million acres, where bonobos are protected. Major accomplishment: Vie Sauvage, our long-time partner, won the 2020 Equator Prize! This prestigious award from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) recognizes ten outstanding indigenous and local community groups from across the world. Each winner showcases innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling biodiversity, climate change, and poverty challenges. Long-term bonobo research program at Kokolopori entered its fifth year, under the auspices of Harvard University. Although field activities, travel, and ecotourism development underway were set back due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we made progress on planning and new partnerships.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$108.4KProgram 2 [2020]
REDD+ Carbon Credit / Nature-Based Solutions Financing: Forged new partnerships to develop REDD+ carbon financing for the Bonobo Peace Forest, building on the Sankuru Community Carbon Initiative. Engaged in intensive preparations and consultations with potential investors, policy and governmental partners, and other project developers. Raised Impact Investments for project development. Given the heightened urgency to mitigate climate change, sustained funding mechanisms to preserve the standing rainforest are a paramount priority. With Net-Zero commitments from corporations and countries, the carbon markets are opening up. During the Covid lockdown, we focused on developing these new sources of market-based sustainable funding for the Congo rainforest.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$78.3KProgram 3 [2020]
Awareness & Education: Dispatched educators, information, and medical supplies/PPE to field sites in the DRC to prepare local community partners to protect themselves and the bonobos from Covid-19, as well as monkeypox, in response to an outbreak, which can infect both humans and apes. Continued international outreach via social media. Participated in virtual conferences and events, including World Rainforest Day, Wildlife Conservation Network Expo and EarthX. Collaborated with newly established conservation networks, e.g., the Pandemic Response Working Groupan alliance of conservation, scientific, and medical organizations advocating for the protection of wildlife, the environment, and human health by adopting practical policies and strategies to prevent future pandemics, and the IUCN SSC PSG SGA Task Force, the ARRC (Avoidance, Reduction, Restoration and Compensation of negative impacts from Energy, Extractive and Associated Infrastructure Projects on Apes).GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$60.7K
