Ecosystem Health Monitoring
The Trust has continued its efforts to monitor and improve ecosystem health of the Balsam Mountain Preserve. One of our highest priorities is to observe the integrity of the health of the Balsam Mountain conservation easement lands and make stewardship recommendations. When appropriate, the Trust executes these recommendations. Highlights of 2022 include a Brook Trout study found healthy native trout species in 5 of 9 streams sampled, and the treatment of 61 hemlock trees on the Preserve to fight the invasive wooly adelgid.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$4.9KEnvironmental Education Programs
The Trust continued to develop and present environmental education programs to thousands of students and lifelong learners. Since its founding, the trust has reached over 100,000 program participants. The Trust's partnership with AmeriCorps and the Conservation Trust of North Carolina continued program presentations to schools who have a majority of students that fall under the poverty line in Jackson and Haywood Counties. The Trust also branched out to provide environmental education experiences to the local "Parents as Teachers" group, a program to serve parents and their pre-K children in western North Carolina.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$85.9KNature Center Outreach
