COLUMBUS ADULT EDUCATION CENTER
Programs
English Language and Community Integration
2. Program/Project Description (not to exceed two paragraphs): Columbus Adult Education Center serves more than 1,500 immigrants and refugees annually, with locations in Salt Lake City, Herriman, and Ogden, Utah. These campuses teach a variety of free classes, including English language, legal immigration assistance (taught by volunteers from the SJ. Quinney College of Law), health, music, sewing, preparedness, and citizenship, along with providing training on such topics as getting drivers licenses, dealing with schools, Utah road safety laws, etc. Our locations are used for vision clinics, tax clinics (run by the Westminster University VITA program), homeschooling organizations, and recreation, such as basketball and dance classes for the Ukrainian and South Sudanese communities-all geared to help the immigrants in our communities feel welcomed and to help them assimilate into American society while honoring the legacy of their cultures and traditions. All of these programs are taught and led by volunteers, as is the organization itself. No one at the Columbus Adult Education Center receives a salary. The main program we offer is our free English-language courses, which have been incredibly popular and valuable. Our Salt Lake campus teaches English classes to 80 students weekly, and our Herriman campus has 250 English students with approximately 400 on a waiting list. lt is our goal to reach as many or more individuals in the Ogden area, once our facility there has been remodeled for such classes. Supp01i from the R. Harold Burton Foundation would help underwrite our programming, in pat1icular the maintenance, utilities, and internet costs required at the three locations.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesFeb 1, 2024 – Jan 31, 2025Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$45.8K
