Find Connections Between Two People or Organizations

Impala for Fundraisers automatically looks for connections from your team (including board members) and existing funders and includes those in your prospect lists.

However, Impala for Fundraisers also includes expanded capabilities to let you run custom relationship searches! You can access these custom searches from your homepage.

From the homepage, select the Finding connections tile from the bottom right of the screen and select See how two people or organizations could be connected.

(For instructions on how to use the second option of  “Discover who a person or group of people could connect you to”, check out the article here)

Step 1

Here, you can search and view all connections between a known origin and destination. This is a great way to see if there are existing connections between two organizations or people.

You can search using four methods: Person to Person, Organization to Organization, Organization to Person, or Person to Organization.

If your account is associated with a profile, the profile will auto-populate as your Origin.

If you want to use a different Origin, click the x and select the icon of the type of endpoint: an organization or a person. You can then search for the person or organization you'd like to input. The most direct way to search for an organization is by inputting its EIN.

Step 3

Your results will show based on Degree of Connection.

The degree of connection is the number of steps within your path to get from your origin to destination. Paths will show you direct, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree connections.

You can narrow down your results using the filters on the right hand side. You can filter by Degrees, Connections, or Other Filters.

The Connections filters allow you to select results based only on specific connection types, like grant information for organizational connections, or board overlap for people connections.

If you deselect a connection type, it will remove ALL results that include that type of connection

You can use the toggleable filters to narrow down your results to include at least one network connection or at least one people-based connection.

The Other Filters allow you to specify certain requirements for the different connections in your results. Select your filters and click Apply:

  • For Person to Person connections, you can set minimum years of board and work overlap, most recent year of work overlap, and the minimum number of organizations that they worked at.
  • For Organization to Person connections, you can set the minimum number of years of board service or employment, recency of employment or board involvement, and level of employment seniority.
  • For Organization to Organization connections, you can set minimum grant numbers, grant recency requirements, minimum grantee overlap, and more.

Step 4

Hover over or click into a result to see more details on the connection.

For example, if the connection is grant-based, you can see the years and amounts of the grants given. For people connections, you can view the exact years they overlapped on a board or staff list.
