Maine Jewish Film Festival
Programs
Program 1 [2021]
The mission of the Maine Jewish Film Festival is to enrich, educate and entertain a diverse audience through the presentation of film programs based on the global Jewish experience. Programs often include post-film speakers and discussions. Our primary event is a film festival, with other film based programs occurring throughout the year. Historically, the festival is held in March and lasts for approximately 8 days, with programs in Portland, Brunswick, Lewiston, Waterville, Bangor and Rockland. Approximately 3000 filmgoers attend. In addition to the festival in March, the organization also organizes various film events in the fall and spring and works with schools to present festival films in educational environments. The 2020 Maine Jewish Film Festival was scheduled to take place starting on March 28, 2020. Due to the pandemic, we were forced postpone the Festival to November 2020 and hold it as a virtual festival. MJFF also created a program called Weekend Edition in 2021. This program included films and discussions one weekend a month from January through June. These programs were offered free of charge.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJun 1, 2020 – May 31, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$97.7KFilm Programming for Community Engagement
We program films that address important universal themes depicted through a lens of Jewish experience. Through surveys we know that only about half of our audience identifies as Jewish. The un-polemic nature of the film experience provides a safe and environment in which to challenge preconceptions and open minds. We routinely set aside blocks of tickets for students, educators. In 2022 and early 2023 virtually all of our live programs were shown for free. Over that time, we partnered with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Museum of Art, The Maine Jewish Museum, the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, The Parsonage Gallery (Belfast, Maine), Maine Film Center, Maine Jewish Museum, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges, and the Holocaust and Human Rights Center (HHRC). We introduced the HHRC to a film we thought they would want use in classroom setting and worked with the distributor to facilitate the acquisition.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJun 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$118.1K
