Direct Youth Mentoring
Trekkers direct youth mentoring program serves 7th through 12th grade students from the rural communities of Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Cushing, Owls Head and St. George. Throughout the 6-year journey, students work with their cohorts to plan and execute annual 10 – 14-day expeditions using Trekkers’ five educational components: environmental awareness, service learning, cultural awareness, wilderness exploration, and adventure-based education. This stepladder model offers intentional growth opportunities, while also strengthening the social-emotional skills necessary to transition to adulthood with resilience, optimism, and connections.GeographiesKnox County, ME, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedYouth development,Environmental education,EducationChildren and youth200–Trekkers Training Instiute
Recognizing the success of the Trekkers’ model, the Trekkers Training Institute was founded in 2016 to provide training, coaching, and mentoring to schools and youth serving organizations. We are currently working with five organizations across Maine that have created Trekkers-informed programs. Although implementation may vary by community, we believe that all youth deserve access to a high-quality, long-term mentoring program and we’re committed to doing our part to move that vision forward.GeographiesMaine, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEducation,Youth developmentAdults––
