Youth Development Programs
The Food Project’s youth programs operate as a three-tiered pipeline, with increasing levels of empowerment and leadership expected throughout. The introductory summer Seed Crew focuses on a blend of farm work and personal development workshops that explore our food system. As youth progress into the academic-year Dirt Crew, year-round Root Crew and onto alumni fellowship positions, there are increasing levels of community-facing work, peer leadership, and project management. Dirt Crew helps to build raised beds for resident-use and lead volunteer sessions. Root Crew plans and operates initiatives that impact their community's health and food landscape, including running our markets and other community events. Throughout these programs, there is a strong emphasis on building relationships and working across social dividing lines, as crews bring together young people from urban and suburban communities, a diverse array of identities, and differing socioeconomic backgrounds.GeographiesDorchester, Boston, MA, USA;Lincoln, MA, USA;Wenham, MA, USA;Lynn, MA, USA;Roxbury, Boston, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFood security,Sustainable development,Environmental justiceAdolescents120–Community Food Growing and Food Access Programs
Our community programming includes operating and vending at three SNAP- and- HIP-accessible farmers markets located in Ashmont, Dudley and Lynn; Build-a-Garden, our program that engages youth and volunteers to build raised bed gardens for low-to-moderate income residents of Boston and Lynn; and Serve and Grow, our corporate and community volunteer program that engages groups in sustainable farm work. The Food Project also donates food harvested from our farms to 20 local food access organizations across Greater Boston and the North Shore.GeographiesLynn, MA, USA;Dorchester, Boston, MA, USA;Roxbury, Boston, MA, USA;Boston Metropolitan Area, USA;North Shore, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedCommunity food systems,Sustainable agriculture,Environmental justice,Environmental healthAge groups,Ethnic and racial groups,Economically disadvantaged people191K–
