Career Exploration and Training
Career Exploration and Opportunities: These innovative programs give youth the opportunity to hone their strengths and discover their passions while exploring a variety of careers, developing marketable skills, and participating in paid work-based learning. In our Summer Internship Program, we work with youth to understand their skills and interests and then match them with employers for six-week paid internships in fields such as early education, healthcare, biomedical research, public relations, and law. WPY actively seeks to expand participating industries and employers in and around Waltham. Interns also attend weekly skill-building and career exploration workshops, and receive significant one-on-one support learning to develop resumes, cover letters, personal vision statements, and interview skills. Our Teaching for Social Justice program encourages students of color and multilingual students to explore careers in education while earning college credit through a dual enrollment course in partnership with Waltham High School and Lasell University. WPY co-facilitates the course and coordinates all programmatic elements, including guest speakers, practicum placements, and partnership with Lasell University. Through this program, we are investing now in a more diverse and justice-oriented teacher workforce of tomorrow. The Career Exploration & Training (CET) program connects students to life-altering career development opportunities through meaningful paid internship experiences and professional development, including the Summer Internship Program, Teaching for Social Justice Program, and Teen Mental Health Alliance Internship Program.GeographiesWaltham, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedJob creation and workforce development,Youth developmentYoung adults,Adolescents150$345KWraparound Waltham
Wraparound Waltham is a multi-agency collaborative of educators and service providers, led by WPY, working to address disparities in high school graduation and dropout rates among newcomer Waltham students. Wraparound Waltham’s initiatives currently focus on LatinX Spanish-speaking students and families who are Emerging Bilinguals and new to the country. Wraparound works closely with students and their caregivers to comprehensively understand the needs, strengths, and personal goals of each student. The program leverages in-school and out-of-school supports designed to address needs such as food, housing, and transportation; employment; linguistic and social inclusion; school belonging and engagement; academic progress; ability to adapt to new environments; and access to mental health care.GeographiesWaltham, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedImmigrant services,Youth developmentYoung adults,Adolescents,Immigrants and migrants475$314KYouth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)
