FOOD AND HOUSING: MANY RESIDENTS STRUGGLED TO PAY FOR FOOD AND HOUSING COSTS WHEN THEIR JOBS WERE DISRUPTED BY COVID-19.VASHONBEPREPARED PARTNERED WITH SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING VASHON MAURY COMMUNITY FOOD BANK, VASHON YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES, VASHON ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT NUTRITION PROGRAM, AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS TO SUPPORT THE COST OF FOOD AND MEALS, RENTS, AND OTHER NEEDS FOR FAMILIES IN DIRE STRAITS.AID INCLUDED 25,573 MEALS (MANY OF THEM DELIVERED TO HOUSEHOLDS AND NEIGHBORHOODS), 4,380 BAGS OF GROCERIES (MANY OF THEM DELIVERED TO HOUSEHOLDS), 404 INSTANCES OF FAMILY ASSISTANCE (RENT RELIEF AND OTHER EMERGENCY SUPPORT), 1,117 COUNSELING SESSIONS (FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCACY)TO SUPPORT THESE EFFORTS, VASHONBEPREPARED CREATED THE VASHON COVID RELIEF FUND. HUNDREDS OF ISLAND RESIDENTS DONATED TO THE FUND. COVID-19 TESTING PROGRAMWITHIN THREE WEEKS AFTER ACTIVATING ON MARCH 12, 2020, WE HAD ESTABLISHED OUR OWN COVID-19 TESTING CENTER. THIS WAS CRUCIAL BECAUSE TESTING WAS NOT OTHERWISE AVAILABLE ON VASHON ISLAND, AND THE STAY HOME ORDER STRONGLY DISCOURAGED PEOPLE FROM TRAVELING TO THE MAINLAND FOR TESTS.THE TESTING SITE WAS OPERATED BY VASHON MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS, VASHON COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT), AND VASHONEMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER TEAMS. THIS SITE PERFORMED MORE THAN 3,600 COVID-19 PCR TESTS, UNCOVERING OVER TWO-THIRDS OF THE POSITIVE CASES ON VASHON. FROM POSITIVE TESTS, THE MRC CONDUCTED CONTACT TRACING FOLLOW-UP TO LIMIT COMMUNITY SPREAD, IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH PUBLIC HEALTH SEATTLE-KING COUNTY. AT A TIME WHEN PEOPLE WERE SEEKING RELIABLE INFORMATION, OUR INCIDENT COMMANDER/FIRE CHIEF DIRECTED THAT WE BEGIN PUBLISHING OUR SITUATION REPORTS TO THE COMMUNITY.
