The NYC Indie Theatre Program
We opened the season in September 2022 with a production of My Onliness, written by Artistic Director Robert Lyons, directed by Daniel Irizarry. It was a huge hit with rave reviews from The New York Times and The New Yorker, among others. It has since been invited to the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania in June 2025.In February, we presented our Now In Process program featuring new works-in-progress including: Untitled Ukraine Project by The Mill, Embodied by Free Rein Projects, Rubalee by Caborca, and Longing Lights by Deniz Khateri & Bahar Royaee. We also presented the 7th year of our NYC Indie Theatre Film Festival featuring feature films, short films, Q&As with filmmakers, and industry panels. In May, we presented Being Chaka, our final Archive Residency project, created by TEA Artistry. Lead actor Kahiem Rivera was nominated for an Audelco Recognition Award for Excellence in Black Theatre. Throughout the year, we continued our Hosting (curated rental) program, including work by Eden Theater Co., Hunger & Thirst, Max Hunter Productions, and Untitled Theatre Co. In July & August we presented the 30th and final year of Ice Factory, our summer festival of new work, featuring: Deadclass, Ohio by The Goat Exchange, Zebra 2.0 by Anomalousco & the Romanian Cultural Institute, On the Cranial Nerves of Barbarians II: A Carp Sanctuary by PPL, Here I Fall Up by Golison/Heacock/Pascouche, Gerstl Took the Easy Way Out by Notch Theatre Co., and How I Disappeared by Chuang Stage. With the closing of the Christopher Street space Aug.31, 2023 we are no longer d.b.a as New Ohio Theatre, and are now operating as Soho Think Tank (our actual 501.c.3 incorporated name). In September we produced the Downtown Upstate festival, bringing the best of NYC downtown theatre artists to the Hudson Valley, featuring three different shows at two different venues over three consecutive weekends. Downtown Upstate also included a solo performance workshop for local residents. Presented by Ancram Center for the Arts & Stissing Center (Pine Plains). Produced with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts. The festival included: Blessed Unrests LA MUSICA DEUXIEME by Marguerite Duras, PUZZLING EVIDENCE, written & directed by Robert Lyons, and PLAYS by Gertrude Stein, performed by David Greenspan. Lenora Champagne taught the solo-performance workshop. The festival was widely covered by local press and included a live interview with Lyons on WKZE, the beloved local radio station. In May we presented CLASS DISMISED, written by Artistic Director Robert Lyons, at La Mama in NYCs East Village for three weeks: April 18 - May 4. We had excellent audiences and many sold-out performances. The New York Times called it Effusively unhinged! The New York Observer called it: a head-spinning collision of political philosophy and clowning. We had also had many on-line raves as well. La Mama offered us an open-ended invitation to return in the future. We'll be bringing PUZZLING EVIDENCE there in spring 2027.In June our show MY ONLINESS, also written by Artistic Director Lyons, was presented at the prestigious Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania. Our entire ensemble (of fifteen) was flown to and housed in Sibiu. We performed on June 20 & 21 to sold-out houses. The work was translated into Romanian and projected on supertitles for the performance. Audiences loved the show and we received two rave reviews from European publications: one from Aplauze and one from Hermannstadter Zeitung. We are hoping to take CLASS DISMISSED there in 2027!In December Robert was interviewed as part of TORCHES, a limited-series podcast produced by Kristin Marting with support from the Mellon Foundation, featuring significant downtown theatre artists of the last thirty years. That program is currently rolling out on HOWLROUND,a digital hub for global theatre conversations.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesSep 1, 2024 – Aug 31, 2025Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$116.8K
