The College of Worker's Compensation Lawyers, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Tennessee as a non-profit corporation on January 15, 2007, to recognize outstanding practitioners of workers compensation laws with the understanding that Workers Compensation is a very important field of law, if not the most important. It touches more lives than any other area of law. It involves the payment of huge sums of money. The welfare of human beings, the success of business and the pocketbooks of consumers are affected by it. Judge E.R. Mills, Singletary vs. Maugham Construction, 418 S. 2d 1138 Fla. DCA 1982. The qualifications for election are: Candidates must have been in the field of Workers Compensation for at least 20 years and have proven to their peers, the bar, bench and public ,that they possess the highest professional qualifications and ethical standards the highest level of character, integrity, professional expertise and leadership commitment to fostering and furthering the objective of the College sustained exceptional high quality professional services to clients, bar, bench and public and significant evidence of scholarship, teaching, lecturing and/or distinguished public writing on Workers Compensation or related fields of law. In addition to the traits described above, a Fellow is expected to display the following traits in the day-to-day practice of law. The list below is by no means complete, but it is provided by Sponsors and Candidates for their guidance in determining whether a candidate meets the expectations for a Fellow. A Fellow is an individual who 1 would stand out to newer attorneys as a model of professionalism in deportment and advocacy, and as a person who should be emulated and has earned the respect of the bench, opposing counsel and the legal community 2 displays civility in an adversarial relationship 3 avoids ideological differences to affect civility in negotiations, litigation and other aspects of law practice 4 demonstrates an active interest in resolving issues 5 is a student of the law 6 has a thirst for knowledge in all areas of the law that affect the representation of such person's clients in Worker's Compensation 7 actively participates in the state, local and national Bar and 8 has a a reputation as an individual with broad knowledge in all aspects of worker's compensation law. The College focuses on two separate activities. The first is the co-sponsorship of continuing legal education seminars, which occur in conjunction with the induction dinner of the College. The second is a student writing competition in which the winner receives an award at the annual induction dinner.
