On May 18, 2019, 165 organizations were Stars On Broadway in the 13th Annual Dance Parade by presenting their artistry to over 100,000 audience members. Grand Marshals Bill T. Jones, Baayork Lee, Louis Mofsie and DJ Dara led over 10,000 emerging as well as professional dance artists. A record 106 unique styles of dance were presented. The event was covered broadly by the media, including by a feature in the New York Times, Spectrum News NY1 and Spectrum Noticias. The 2019 theme, Movement of the People was celebrated by honoring indigenous dance was intended to counter negativity by the Federal Government about Walls & Immigration. Throughout the year, we employed artists for performances like Hudson River Park Dance Nights, NYCs Summer Streets, Winters Eve at Lincoln Square. Our Community Engagement Programs provided dance workshops and 12 week residencies to schools, community and senior centers throughout NYC. In partnership with the NYC Parks Dept, our Community Kinect curriculum incorporated aerobic movement with dance. World cultural forms were presented in our Cultural Residency Programs. Ageless Action residencies were offered to seniors fostering balance, flexibility, and circulation. Over 120 seniors took on residencies at four SU-CASA senior centers. 637 participants, mostly middle and high school students, received FY19 Community Engagement residencies. Following the 13th Annual Dance Parade, DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park came alive from 3-7pm with 5 stages and site specific performances Saturday May 18th. Leading up to the event, our curatorial committee chaired by DJ McDonald (currently director of Battery Dance Festival) with committee members Mona Freeman (dancer and former ballet studio owner), Jamila Homan (dancer and choreographer for Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam) and Sherrell Whitmore (former hip-hop dancer and dancer for the New York Jets) reviewed 80 applications for performances on the main stage at DanceFest after the parade. After a land acknowledgment ceremony on each stage, 31 performances ensued on the main stage, 51 on the family stage, 8 dance lessons and 8 site specific performances throughout the park.
