Coalition for Healthy Food in Schools
The Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools (CHFiNS) is a collaborative initiative led by Greater Newark Conservancy to improve access to nutritious meals in Newark’s public schools. Working alongside organizations like Wellness in the Schools, FoodCorps NJ, The Common Market, and Urban Agriculture Coorperative, the Coalition follows the Six Pillars of Food Security: availability, access, utilization, stability, agency, and sustainability. Our work supports student health and learning through: Advocacy for stronger child nutrition programs in Newark Fresh and local food sourcing and school garden development Culturally reflective school lunches Hands-on food education for students and familiesGeographiesNewark, NJ, USADatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024SourceUser-generatedFarmlands,Farm viability,Fruit and Vegetable Markets,Irrigation and water management,Livestock and ranching,Soil Preparation, Planting, and Cultivating,Food security,Early childhood educationAge groups,Families,Parents––Second Saturday Family Adventures
Through immersive, nature-based programs for families, schools, and educators, we create opportunities for our community to connect with the environment. Each month, families participate in themed outdoor programs focused on ecology, animals, nature exploration, and more. These engaging sessions promote environmental literacy through nature walks, scavenger hunts, hands-on science activities, and creative crafts.GeographiesNewark, NJ, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFarmlands,Farm viability,Fruit and Vegetable Markets,Irrigation and water management,Livestock and ranching,Soil Preparation, Planting, and Cultivating,Food security,Biodiversity,Environmental education,Environmental justiceAge groups,Families,Parents––Family Fun in the Kitchen
Hosted in our demonstration kitchen, this monthly event brings families together to learn healthy cooking skills using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Our plant-based, vegan Chef-led recipes encourage children and adults to try new foods, build healthy nutrition habits, prepare meals at home, understand the origins of their food, and explore sustainable, healthy lifestyles.GeographiesNewark, NJ, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFarm viability,Fruit and Vegetable Markets,Irrigation and water management,Livestock and ranching,Soil Preparation, Planting, and Cultivating,Food security,Nutrition,Dining services,Food safetyAge groups,Families,Parents––
