LDA Educational Outreach Programs
Education - the LDA's efforts are multi-pronged - providing free speakers for programs for various audiences:public,corporations,schools,government officials, health care providers, radio interviews- although 2021 was more limited in scope & often virtual due to ongoing COVID. Printed brochures are ordered through LDA website for shipping cost. Most LDA materials/articles are posted on website for free download/printing. LDA publishes a free monthly e-newsletter featuring articles on current research, news,links to resources & researcher funding opportunities/studies for public. In May, LDA online Guest Blogs were presented by experts in tick-borne diseases and published in May newsletter. Physician Continuing Medical Education (CME): The Lyme Disease Association & Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons jointly provided the 21st annual CME scientific conference "Lyme & Other Tick-borne Diseases:Research For a Cure." The 9 hour conference featured 12 speakers from the US/Canada in the virtual event. Topics included Lyme-COVID, Lyme & Suicide, Bartonella, Lyme research (Peptidoglycan, CNS inflammation, carditis), therapies (combined, disulfiram), TBD testing & Bartonella in melanoma. It included live Q & A sessions & provided CME credits for medical providers & scholarships for medical students, researchers, recent medical professionals & advocates. Research, Education, LymeAid 4 Kids Grants: Since 1992, LDA has provided 123 research grants including a 2021 grant to Pike County, PA, for tick/pathogen testing. Research published in peer-reviewed journals helps move the field forward. In 2021, two new publications, "Journal of Vector Ecology & Frontiers in Neurology," acknowledged the LDA as research funder, bringing to 58 the total number of journal publications to date from LDA-funded research. From 1999 to 2022, LDA also awarded educational grants to other non-profits, hospitals, universities/other entities to provided educational programs, conferences, billboards, printed matter/other materials on Lyme/TBD-2021 grants to Minnesota Lyme Association. PA Lyme Resource Center, Lyme Fight Foundation & Oxford Area Foundation.
