Treehouse Intergenerational Community in Easthampton
The flagship intergenerational community in western Massachusetts is the only intentional neighborhood of its kind in the state, and is home to 120 people, ages 9 months to 93 years. The Treehouse Community was founded to support families that take in foster children in the hopes of stopping the bounce through the system. At Treehouse Easthampton, three generations live together and help each other thrive. We provide services and an environment that guarantees better outcomes for all community members. The Treehouse community offers on-site social services appropriate for the emotional and practical challenges that foster children and their adoptive families can face. Simultaneously, our resident elders act as "honorary grandparents," offering love and support, and sharing their expertise with children in the Treehouse neighborhood through projects that encourage creativity, curiosity, and competence.GeographiesEasthampton, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedChild welfare,Elder housing,Intergenerational mentoring,Senior services,Public housingChildren and youth,Older adults,Seniors,Foster and adoptive children,Foster and adoptive parents120–HEROES Youth Leadership
HEROES is Treehouse's youth leadership development program, serving Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties, where a disproportionate 40% of Massachusetts' youth in foster care reside. HEROES provides education and leadership development support to help youth who’ve experienced foster care navigate the transitions to high school and adulthood with confidence and grace. Our program activities draw on the skills and experience of an intergenerational cohort of volunteers, and incorporate arts and outdoor adventure to develop critical life, leadership, and advocacy skills.GeographiesEasthampton, MA, USA;Greenfield, MA 01301, USA;Holyoke, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedAdoption,Foster care,Community service for youth,Youth mentoring,Youth services,Out-of-school learning,Tutoring,Community serviceAdolescents,Preteens,Young adults,Foster and adoptive children75–The Re-Envisioning Foster Care in America (REFCA) Movement
The REFCA Movement is a collaborative social change movement designed to inspire widespread investment in foster care innovation and better serve the nearly half million children and youth living in foster care in the United States. The REFCA Movement’s Guiding Principles: Engaging in Collaborative Social Change – We collaborate with partner organizations to change the foster care narrative from coast to coast. Honoring Lived Experience and Expertise – We celebrate the power of collective voices by awarding REFCA Champions – stellar leaders who are using their lived experience to create a Culture of Possibility, and are inspiring and leading a Re-Envisioning of Foster Care in America. Investing in Foster Care Innovation – We collaborate with partners and national leaders to invest in an inclusive, compassionate, and effective model of foster care innovation that is designed to ensure every child is rooted in family and community and that nobody ages out of foster care alone. With the REFCA movement, Treehouse has developed a strategic approach to harnessing and amplifying the power of changemakers. The REFCA movement addresses the big picture of foster care in America, elevating the conversation and affecting change greater than what any one organization alone could do, in order to create positive outcomes for our nation’s young people experiencing foster care.GeographiesEasthampton, MA, USA;Boston, MA, USA;United StatesDatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedChild welfareChildren and youth,Young adults,Foster and adoptive children––
