Animal Shelter and Adoption Services
See Schedule O. The organization has ceased operations as of December 27, 2024.The HSCC is a no-kill animal shelter housing approximately 110 animalsa day. While under our care these animals receive daily necessities, medical care and socialization in preparation for their adoption. Forthose less adoptable animals the HSCC becomes their sanctuary. Allanimals are spayed/neutered while under the care of the HSCC (if notprior to intake) and fully vetted. These pets are typically ownersurrenders or animals rescued from the county shelter. Owner surrenderscome to us for various reasons such as owner illness or homelessness, animal illness/medical condition, lifestyle no longer caters to a petor they are simply not wanted anymore. The need for a safe haven is often far greater than our space and/orresources permit. Often, we help pets stay within their home byproviding pet food and supplies, counseling and additional resources. Our Home-to-Home program assists owners who want to keep their pets outof a shelter by matching them with those wishing to adopt. We providefood to "Meals on Wheels" participants and many other individuals andfamilies within Cobb County who are financially struggling and findingit difficult to feed their pets. By offering this service the HSCCallows these animals to stay in loving homes and reduces the numberbeing surrendered to shelters and those that may be euthanized. Wealso provided citizens with cages, dog houses, carriers, traps, etc. toassist with housing or transporting animals. To help reduce the issue of pet overpopulation the HSCC dispensed over5,500 low cost spay/neuter certificates to the general public. Thesecertificates are honored at ten participating veterinary clinics withinCobb County. This program encourages and allows pet owners theopportunity to spay/neuter their pets for a more affordable cost whichwill protect their health and reduce their desire to roam. We educatecitizens on the importance of spay/neuter through outreach at communityevents, educational programs and counseling. Without this proactivemeasure the number of unwanted pets will continue to grow which willultimately lead to more animals being abandoned, feral cat coloniesexpanding and the number of dogs roaming at large increasing. In turnthe local county shelter will encounter more owner surrenders and strayretrievals along with a higher number of euthanasia as the facilityreaches maximum capacity. The HSCC provides educational programs to youths within the communitysuch as schools groups, scout troops, etc. Our programs help nurture asense of responsibility and compassion and teaches skills to gentlyandle and safely interact with animals. Research shows that childhoodcruelty to animals can be a warning sign of violence and criminalbehavior in later life. Our goal is to help educate and preparechildren for their future to be responsible pet owners and providehumane treatment to animals of all kinds. To promote HSCC adoptable animals and valuable information regardinghumane pet guardianship, we appeared on Fox 5 TV's "Good Day Atlanta"with a "Pet of the Day" fifty-two Monday mornings during 2023. With adaily viewing audience for this segment being over 250,000 households,we are able to give our animals a great deal of exposure, and share whowe are and what we do, along with educational information regarding petownership. The HSCC maintains a website, humanecobb.com, which provides valuablepet ownership information 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our websitealso posts our adoptable animals for the general public to view, sharesnews and upcoming community events the HSCC will be participating in aswell as the programs that are offered.Every Friday we shared a featured "Forever Home Friday" pet on our Facebook page in order to reach an additional audience which further increased those animals' chances of adoption.HSCC representatives counseled and provided resources to over 5,000 petguardians on various animal related topics via the phone or emailduring 2024. These included pet adoption inquiries, lost and foundsituations, reporting animal neglect and needed guidance on peteuthanasia just to name a few.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$2.7M
