Mabou Mines Productions and Artist Programs
In FY23 Mabou Mines mounted two productions and hosted two programs for early career artists as well as developed several projects for upcoming premieres.In August 2022, Mabou Mines prepared for the remount of Mud/Drowning by Maria Irene Fornes, directed by JoAnne Akalaitis and music by Philip Glass. Mud/Drowning staged two of Fornes plays with Drowning as an opera adaption. Performances began on September 21, 2022 and ran through October 9, 2022 for 15 performances. SUITE/Space began performances on December 4, 2022 and ran through December 8, 2022 of four artists original work: Glenn Potter Takata performed Yonsei; Mary Prescott performed Tida; Shantelle Courvoisier Jackson performed American Ghoul and Sim Yan Ying YY directed and devised Where are you? (New York). The program creates a festival atmosphere with two shows rotating each night for four nights totalling 12 performances. Mabou Mines Vicksburg Project premiered at Harlem Stage on January 12, 2022 and ran through January 14, 2023. This new music theatre piece, Vicksburg Project, was written by Karen Kandel, music by Eve Beglarian, and directed by Mallory Catlett. The piece followed the lives of women in Vicksburg MS over 150 years.Following a six-month residence, Mabou Mines hosted three Resident Artists work: Jovon Outlaws Human | Humane, Lydia Jialu Lis Eye Eye Eye ????, and Sarah Finns Our bodies like dams. Performances began on June 8 and ran through June 10 with two rotating shows per night. Mabou Mines began development on several new works: Barcelona Map of Shadows, an opera adaptation of a play by Spanish playwright Lluissa Cunille, directed by Mallory Catlett, music composed by Mika Karlsson and dramaturg Anton Pujol. Also in development, Etudes by Carl Hancock Rux with Jocelyn Clarke as dramaturg. RENTAL PROGRAM: Theater and Studio Space Rentals to local artists, non-profits and universities to support the arts community with subsidized space.RUTH MALECZECH AWARDS: An annual cash award given to 1 or 2 performers "who embody Ruth's daring and raw, naked, fearlessness in every performance." FY25 awardees: Nicky Paraiso & Penny Arcade. September 29, 2024SUITE/space RESIDENCY PROGRAM: A 6-month residency for emerging, NYC, BIPOC artists. We presented Mary Prescott's SUNDER December 11-13, 2024 and excerpts of new works by former SUITE/space artists on December 16, 2024. Artists included: Maria Takeuchi, Jermaine Rowe, Marcelle Davies Lashley, Tariq Al-Sabir and Yoko Murakami. Artists all received rehearsal space, administrative and technical support, artistic advisement and a stipend. Ms. Prescott received a 50%-50% box office split.UTR Festival: Mabou Mines Partners annually with the Under The Radar Festival to present and produce or co-produce an original piece of performance. Mabou Mines co-commissioned, with Carolina Performing Arts, and co-produced, with Advanced Beginner Group, a new devised theater performance, Rich with History and other stuff you say at a haunted house, by Marcella Murray, David Neumann, and Tei Blow that extended the ensembles years-long exploration of race and relationship. Performances Jan 8-16, 2025. The piece toured to Carolina Performing Arts Feb. 27-28, 2025.FROM THE ARCHIVE: Moi-mme - Long lost sole feature film of the late avant-garde theater legend Lee Breuer (1937-2021). Shot in 1968 in Paris and abandoned later that year, the project was resurrected by Breuers son, filmmaker Mojo Lorwin, who began restoring and re-imagining the unfinished film in the last year of his fathers life. February 27, 2025 @ L'Alliance Florence Gould TheaterWORLD PREMIERES: RAINBIRD an opera based on the novel Yellow Flowers in the Antipodean Room by Janet Frame. Created by: Mallory Catlett and Aaron Siegel. Co-produced by: Mabou Mines, Experiments in Opera & Restless NYC. Performances April 16-20, 2025This Like a Dream Keeps Other Time - By Visual Artist Nene Humphrey in collaboration with Mallory Catlett. Co-produced by Mabou Mines. The piece invites the audience to share in a liminal space where loss is transformed into beauty, joy, and connection through song, visual art, and movement. The piece is a celebration of life, memory, and the healing power of communityone that challenges the boundaries between dream and reality, personal and collective experience.
