Children's Books by Local Women
Peace and Freedom Publishing works with local women of color to write and publish children's books so that local children of color can see themselves as part of our community. Martin Luther King Day, Jr. Community Breakfast and Youth Oratory and Art Contest. Youth from through Marion County submit original art in the form of poetry, essay, visual and oratory that speaks to a specific theme centered on the work of Dr. King. Gives young people a voice and an introduction to the philosophy of Dr. King. 30 youth entered the contest in 2024. They were recognized at the MLK Day Breakfast: This is Marion's only community wide event celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King. 410 people attend each year including approximately 70 children and teens. Hats Off to You Ladies Luncheon: This event is held each April and recognizes Marion women who have overcome adversity and are an inspiration to others. We also recognize a local woman of color who is successful in business and women who volunteer for the community. Each event features a key note speaker with words of inspiration and hope.
