ENABLING APPLICATION: A KEY COMPONENT OF ENSURING THAT INFORMATION AND SOLUTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR USE IS COMPILING, SYNTHESIZING, AND SHARING SCIENTIFIC STUDIES, PUBLICATIONS, AND LEARNINGS. AWWI PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THIS EFFORT BY CONTINUALLY STAYING ABREAST OF ALL WIND-WILDLIFE AND RELATED ACTIVITIES, DEVELOPING MILESTONE SYNTHESES AND RESOURCES, AND PROVIDING MULTIPLE VENUES FOR STAKEHOLDERS OF ALL EXPERTISE LEVELS TO ACCESS THIS INFORMATION. AWWI ALSO SUPPORTS THE UPTAKE AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WIND-WILDLIFE TOOLS AND RESOURCES, AS WELL AS CROSS-SECTOR RELATIONSHIP BUILDING, BY REGULARLY ENGAGING WITH STAKEHOLDERS THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIALOGUE, COLLABORATION, OUTREACH, AND COMMUNICATION. DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS: AWWI'S WORK ADVANCES COST-EFFECTIVE, SCIENTIFICALLY-ACCEPTED SOLUTIONS FOR WIND ENERGY AND WILDLIFE, WITH A FOCUS ON EAGLES, BATS, AND HABITAT-BASED IMPACTS. AWWI'S CUTTING-EDGE WORK IN TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION IS A CATALYST FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES TO AVOID AND MINIMIZE THE IMPACTS OF WIND ENERGY ON WILDLIFE FROM OPERATIONAL WIND FACILITIES. AWWI ENGAGES WITH RESEARCHERS TO CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC EVALUATIONS OF EMERGING AND AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES AT COMMERCIAL WIND ENERGY FACILITIES, RAISES PROJECT FUNDING, AND OVERSEES THE DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF THE TESTS TO ENSURE THAT RESULTS CAN BE COMPARED ACROSS MULTIPLE PROJECTS AND ARE SCIENTIFICALLY RIGOROUS. BY POOLING RESOURCES AND EXPERTISE FROM WIND INDUSTRY PARTNERS, AWWI CAN COORDINATE AND REPLICATE RIGOROUS EVALUATION STUDIES, LEADING TO MORE RAPID AND WIDESPREAD ADOPTION OF SUCCESSFUL APPROACHES TO AVOID AND MINIMIZE RISK.AWWI ALSO WORKS TO DEVELOP, EVALUATE, AND IMPLEMENT TOOLS AND BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO COMPENSATE FOR REMAINING PREDICTED TAKE THROUGH MANAGEMENT THAT INCREASES SURVIVAL OR PRODUCTIVITY. ASSESSING RISK: AWWI PROVIDES NEW INSIGHTS FOR UNDERSTANDING WIND ENERGY'S RISKS TO WILDLIFE THROUGH TOOLS INCLUDING NEW RISK MODELS AND THE AMERICAN WIND WILDLIFE INFORMATION CENTER (AWWIC) POST-CONSTRUCTION FATALITY DATABASE.IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF WIND ENERGY'S IMPACTS ON WILDLIFE IS A PRIORITY IF WE ARE TO ADVANCE WIND ENERGY DEVELOPMENT WHILE PROTECTING WILDLIFE AND HABITAT. FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, WIND ENERGY COMPANIES HAVE UNDERTAKEN NUMEROUS STUDIES TO ASSESS RISK AND IMPACTS TO WILDLIFE FROM WIND ENERGY PROJECTS, INCLUDING COLLISION IMPACTS TO BIRDS AND BATS. SOME OF THE DATA IS PUBLICLY AVAILABLE, BUT OTHER DATA REMAINS CONFIDENTIAL AND IS PRIVATELY OWNED. AWWIC IS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE DATABASE OF POST-CONSTRUCTION FATALITY MONITORING DATA FROM U.S. WIND PROJECTS.
