Bay Area Coalition for Education Justice (formerly Bay Area Transformative Family Engagement Work Group)The Bay Area Coalition for Education Justice is a coalition of local education youth and parent organizing and racial justice organizations across the Bay Area working together to advance Transformative Family Engagement (TFE) in Bay Area school districts and achieve racial justice in Bay Area public schools.Accomplishments:BACEJ Coalition launched a fellowship to begin analysis of three districts family engagement and progress towards implementation of Transformative Family Engagement Standards (TFES). Fellows successfully engaged 1,000 parents across three districts to participate in the TFES Participatory Research Process. Fellows successfully provided feedback to update the TFES Assessment Tool.Leadership Development Program PLANs Leadership Development Program is a coaching-based program that activates a network of Black, Latino, Immigrant and undocumented public-school parents to be leaders of education justice in Bay Area public schools. The PLAN Leadership Development Program aims to develop the leadership of families to invest in their own and their childrens social, emotional, physical and academic development while co-creating leadership goals that build their skills, knowledge and confidence to co-create safe, equitable community schools where transformative family engagement standards are implemented.Accomplishments:800+ hours of leadership coaching provided to support parents with virtual learning and communication with school districts33 parents attended BAPLAN leadership workshops virtually27 parent leaders joined School Sites Councils and English Learner Advisory Committees at their childs school as a result of leadership coaching19 parent leaders join district wide committees10 parent leaders completed our Parent Organizing FellowshipsParent Organizing ProgramParent Organizing Program is a leadership development and organizing program focused on the leadership of public-school parents and community leaders to take action through advocacy and organizing to build their power to win resources for our schools and communities. Through workshops, training of trainers, individualized coaching and internships, parent leaders develop their knowledge, skills and experience in the transformation of schools and districts.Accomplishments:Supported parent leaders to organize against school closures in Oakland Unified School District by coordinating meetings and supporting with organizing tactic implementationThrough Justice for Oakland Students (J4OS) coalition, continued to track implementation of the Reparations for Black Students Resolution implementation, filed official complaint to the Attorney General and filed lawsuit on behalf of J4OS to suit OUSD for lack of compliance with California Environment Quality Act (CEQA)Supported parent leaders on SSCs, ELACs and district wide committees to organize for transparency in school site and district budget processesTransformative Capacity Building ServicesTransformative Capacity Building (TCB) services are individualized, integrity-based approaches to guiding and supporting institutions engaged in the work of expanding and reforming their capacity to be just, equitable and sustainable community resources.Accomplishments:Provided capacity building support to Oakland Unified School Districts Office of Equity to facilitate implementation of equity resolutionSustained centralized collaborative curriculum hub for allies to access leadership development curriculum from PLAN and other organizations throughout the nationWorked with school sites across Bay Area to offer parent workshops under Title I Parent Involvement Thriving Family FundThe Thriving Families Fund offers direct cash assistance to our PLAN parent leaders and their families during the COVID-19 Pandemic as they face short-term emergencies. Through fundraising, PLAN raises resources to support families that have been economically impacted, who need assistance with implementing distance learning.
