The American Strays Project, a core initiative of the World Animal Awareness Society (WA2S), is a groundbreaking effort to document and understand the issue of stray animal populations. It is overseen directly by WA2S Executive Director Tom McPhee, who has been documenting this issue for over a decade. The project's central component is its in-depth, long-form documentary, Unleashed: The Dogs of San Antonio, which explores the complex factors contributing to the city's stray dog problem. This documentary goes beyond simple statistics, aiming to capture the human stories behind the crisis, from the dedicated work of rescuers to the systemic failures of public agencies. The project is multi-faceted, serving as a unique set of tools and services for the communities it enters. Beyond the documentary itself, the American Strays Project includes public forums and workshops that bring together animal welfare professionals, city officials, and community members to foster collaboration and seek solutions using its unique set of digital based survey and data acquisition tools. Its media component is a key driver, with WA2S leveraging its extensive network of YouTube channels and social media platforms to generate public awareness and funding for both the project and local rescue organizations. By combining investigative journalism, community-building, and digital advocacy, the American Strays Project provides a comprehensive approach to an issue that, for many communities, remains unseen and unsolved. WA2S Films is a recognized, award-winning content creator, producing and distributing a vast library of documentary films and viral social media content. Its work has garnered significant viewership, with a portfolio of over a dozen YouTube channels dedicated to animal rescue and awareness. Through this content, WA2S has not only educated a global audience but has also generated substantial funding for our rescue partners. In the past two years alone, WA2S Films has produced over $400,000 in revenue in advertising from its channels, with an additional $150,000 in direct donations, with 110% going to our rescue partners, proving that meaningful storytelling can be a powerful financial engine for a nonprofit. Beyond its media presence, WA2S has established itself as a civic leader through its signature initiative, the Animalis Fabula Film Festival. This San Antonio-based festival is a unique platform that celebrates films about animals and uses them to amplify the missions of nonprofit organizations (NGOs). This strategic pairing of art with advocacy has been a core component of its success. This year, the festival is bringing in major figures like Dr. Temple Grandin to lead a workshop on solving San Antonio's stray dog issues, a direct example of how WA2S uses its platform to address local challenges. These efforts and its partnerships with local institutions, showcase WA2S's commitment to create tangible, positive change in our community.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$15.8K
