  • Ambition on Melting Ice Initiative

    The founding at COP27 of the Ambition on Melting Ice AMI high-level group on sea-level rise and mountain water resources was a keystone achievement in 2022 with 20 governments signing the AMI Declaration see www.ambitionmeltingice.org. AMI aims to unite polar and mountain nations with downstream and low-lying nations equally if not more affected by current and future Cryosphere loss. It built on efforts over several years in the High Urgency Cryosphere process aiming at increasing climate ambition with sufficient urgency to prevent dangerous cryosphere collapse through cuts in fossil emissions and ICCI serves as the AMI sceretariat.

  • Cryosphere Outreach Programs

    Cryosphere Outreach: ICCI continued its educational programs aimed at conveying the observed changes to Cryophere today as well as projected changes and their global impacts with continued high emissions versus lower emissions. This included the 2022 State of the Cryosphere Report a peer-reviewed analysis of the latest Cryosphere research and its implications for policy; the weekly Cryosphere Capsules; and a more active Twitter feed followed by researchers policy makers and the general public alike.

  • Ecuador Agricultural Fire Mapping

    Reducing Agricultural Burning in Ecuador: This U.S. Forest Service-supported project mapped agricultural fires in Ecuador as well the the wildfires that spread from them. In addition to damaging air pollution such fires produce black carbon a powerful warming agent when landing on nearby Andean glaciers and snow. It also identified the main crops being burned to help focus a later follow-on demonstration project in one site aimed at 2023. In addition to mapping by Miami University the project included field visits and a "groundtruthing" conference that engaged over 200 stakeholders as well as proposed next steps.
