    Blue Star Service Dogs initiated training with 16 veteran and dog teams, 10 teams carried over from 2019, 4 veterans in observation and classroom training prior to pairing. We adopted out 6 dogs that did not qualify to be service dogs. 11 teams participated in graduation ceremony and were endorsed by BSSD program. We recertified 4 teams from prior years.

  • Program 2 [2020]

    BSSD's STAR training programs housed selected shelter and rescue dogs at prisons located in Lapeer and Freeland Michigan to complete basic obedience and pre-task training by vetted inmate handlers. BSSD trainers conduct regular training sessions and evaluations until dog cadets are paired with their veteran. This program involves 30 handlers/inmates, 12 handlers being incarcerated veterans, giving them motivation to strive toward cooperative behavior during their incarceration. The program provides purpose for inmates interested in helping the community, disabled veterans, and dogs.

  • Program 3 [2020]

    BSSD offers a popular Bring Your Own Dog program where our qualified trainers evaluate current companion dogs of veteran applicants to train to be a service dog. This year we served 11 veterans in the BYOD program.
