Cuban Film Distribution Initiative
Distribution-U.S. AMI has 14 films in its Cuba DVD catalogue; a distribution collaboration with Icarus Films has increased our visibility in both cultural and academic spheres. Since we began our collaboration with Icarus Films in 2013, over 50 film festivals both national and international have requested screeners of films from the AMI Cuba catalogue. Since the pandemic has kept people at home the Icarus royalty payments for the Cuban film catalogue include many more individual views of our films on their OVID.tv streaming channel expanding the viewership of these films out of the educational market into the realm of home viewership. This has brought more people to the AMI website and added subscribers to our email list.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$4.8KCuban Animation and Documentary Projects
Production-Cuba Juan Antonio Garcia and ENDAC.org continue to receive praise from scholars, journalists and filmmakers. At the end of 2023 there were over 8100 entries on the site. The Stone Center at Tulane University has committed to support for 2024-2025. In 2023 AMI began to support Cuban animator Ivette Avila who is creating the Linterna Violeta (Violet Lantern), an animation series on domestic violence in Cuba. The campaign will include spots for TV and the web. The series will use interviews with women who have been survivors of domestic violence for the animation's story lines and there will also be an in-person workshop. Video Production Mexico In 2022 we began development on the feature documentary, with the working title: IF WE FILM IT, IT'S THE TRUTH which will be crafted from a selection of the over 1400 archival tapes in CEPAAC. We have a production team and in 2023 recorded several interviews with people in Chiapas which include young indigenous filmmakers. We edited a sample reel using archival footage and some of new footage filmed in 2023 that has been submitted for film funding. AMI Director, Alexandra Halkin was awarded two artist residency fellowships to work on the film from MacDowell and the Bogliasco Foundation.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$37.2KCenter for the Preservation of Community Audiovisual Archives
Center for the Preservation of Community Audiovisual Archives-Mexico The over 1400 video tapes in our CMP/ProMedios Archive were digitized and stored on hard drives in an archival format. We received grants from the UCLA Modern Endangered Archives Program (MEAP) and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) that allowed us to organize and perform test digitization of different video formats in our collection. We formally announced our collaboration with ProMedios on the Center for the Preservation of Community Audiovisual Archives (CEPAAC) based in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. In alignment with our mission we are now consulting with some regional organizations and evaluating the condition of their video archives, including Las Abejas and the Organizacin de Mdicos Indgenas del Estado de Chiapas (OMIECH). These are archives that hold important and endangered materials that we hope to eventually help them digitize into archival formats that can be shared with the communities they represent. As more institutions become aware of CEPAAC we are beginning to receive invitations to present our work at conferences and cultural institutions. A MEAP board member has invited us to participate on a MEAP-focused panel at the upcoming American History Association Conference in January 2024. We have also been invited to a panel on video archives at the Latin American Studies Association Conference in Bogota, Colombia spring 2024. We are looking forward to talking about our work, as it is positioning us to be a leader in this up and coming field.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$1.5K
