Food Access
Manages surplus donation streams from local farms to people in need of healthy emergency food by utilizing volunteer labor to harvest or “glean” produce left in the fields, and then provides certified food safe handling, storage, and distribution to a network of 550 hunger-relief agencies. This program also provides logistical support and trucking services to non-profit partners and small farms that lack refrigerated vehicles to safely transport fresh produce. Additionally, beginning in response to COVID-19, we have been sourcing and packing thousands of family-sized grocery boxes weekly for families in our area facing food insecurity, which continues today.GeographiesActon, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFood aid,Food banksLow-income people81.6K–Boston Food Hub
A new wholesale market for local produce that provides income opportunities to farmers while expanding economic and healthy food access opportunities to low-income communities. The food hub purchases high-quality produce from local farms and sells to food businesses located in communities that lack affordable produce purchasing options or adequate distribution. The food hub also provides a much-needed farm-to-institution supply line for local universities, hospitals, food banks, and nonprofits focused on job training. The food hub’s role in providing new market access for farmers is critical to reducing surplus produce and therefore food waste.GeographiesActon, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFood aid,AgricultureLow-income people,Farmers––Education and Outreach
