Liberian Assistance Program
Barack Obama International Foundation School, Cow Field Community, Paynesville, Liberia. In 2021, the Liberian Assistance Program continued to support the school it had built in 2011 by providing daily meals for 250 students and school staff and paying the tuition for 45 children to attend the school. We also continued to support a sewing program we began at the school in 2017, first for adults and later for 7th and 9th grade students as well. We provide funds for a tailor to teach classes and maintain the sewing machines. LAP provides scholarships for the school's teachers to take college classes to expand their knowledge and improve their teaching skills. We had five participate in 2021, including the new principal who earned a public administration degree. Also in 2021, we sent $1000 at the end of each semester to be distributed among the 20 staff members, who are paid very low salaries by the school. In 2021 LAP supported a month-long summer reading program for K-5th grade students in small groups three days per week. We also sent funds for sports equipment and financed the school's annual internet fees.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$34.7KSupport for Gbonkonimah Village
Support for the Village of Gbonkonimah Liberia. One of our main goals when LAP was formed was to help support the village of Gbonkonimah, where one of our board members and several supporters had served as Peace Corps teachers. In 2021, LAP funds were used to provide paint for the exterior of the Tubman School and to remodel a classroom into a school library, adding books, book shelves and tables and chairs. In 2021, we also received a grant that allowed us to do even more for the village. In September a village resident agreed to supervise the work of the grant and hired an electrician to wire the school for electricity. A generator was purchased. Now the students have lights in their classrooms for the very first time and villagers can use the school for meetings or celebrations at night. With other money from the grant, the first of two latrines for the village were begun. The local residents had not had them for many years. The work on the first latrine (with four stalls) was funded in 2021 and completed in early 2022. The second will be build in 2022.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$12.1KHigh School and College Scholarships
High School and College Scholarships. In 2021, we provided scholarships for 11 high school students and six college students. Most of the high school students had graduated as good students from the Obama School and we wanted them to be able to continue their education. The college students came to us through an application process and most are attending colleges in Monrovia. Our American colleague who lives in Monrovia helps guide our students through the application process, handles tuition payments and monitors their grades.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$10.8K
