The Clubs' Education & Career Programs enable youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. A vital component in a community riddled with socio-economic and education constraints, these programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement. Sports, Fitness & Recreation are staples to any youth development program. These programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Bay offer drop-in game rooms, a full-sized gym in the Harbor City facility, flag football and basketball. A Teen Center provides teenagers with their personal space separate from the younger children, respecting their need for independence, while providing nearby guidance and support. Programs in the Health & Life Skills area develop a young person's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. These initiatives help youth achieve and maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Comprehensive prevention programs address alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. Health programs address dental care and vision. Life skills programs provide safety awareness and a program targeted to young men that focuses on responsibility and positive behavior.
