Family Life Education and Professional Development
Educational Activities 2024:NCFR held its annual conference in Bellevue, Washington. Over a thousand people attended onsite and another 60 people watched sessions remotely. The conference included two pre-conference workshops: Theory Construction and Research Methodology; and the Feminist, Fearless, and Fierce Leadership Retreat.NCFR hosted 16 webinars in 2024 for constituents' professional and skill development. NCFR continues to make available all past webinar recordings for this purpose as well. In 2024, NCFR hosted a three-part comprehensive training intended for practitioners working in the community and students wishing to learn more about growing a FLE practice. The training, titled 6 Steps to Growing Your Family Life Education Practice, had 28 participants.In 2024, an average of 1,422 people held the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential and 121 NCFR CFLE-approved programs in the U.S. and internationally. One new academic Family Science program received first-time approval for including coursework that meets CFLE standards. One program reinstated its CFLE-approved status. Twenty-one programs renewed their CFLE-approved status. In 2024, 11 individuals were awarded the first-time CFLE applicant scholarship, and three individuals were awarded the CFLE annual fee scholarship.NCFR hosted eight CFLE Conversations in 2024. CFLE Conversations are one-hour online networking sessions that provide an opportunity for CFLEs to connect with each other on a specified topic of interest. Information dissemination in 2024:NCFR published five issues of its flagship scholarly journal, Journal of Marriage, and Family, five issues of its journal Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science and four issues of its Journal of Family Theory & Review in 2024. A total of 283 articles were published. The journal issues were provided to 2,303 active members in 2024. NCFR journal articles reached readers in 217 countries with around 1.4 million views across the three journals. NCFR created and published two policy briefs in 2024, titled Reducing the Digital Divide for Families: State and Local Policy Opportunities and The Role of Taxation in Family Inequality: Possibilities for Reform. The briefs were disseminated to state policymakers and NCFR members who are encouraged to share with others. The NCFR website provides curated resources to disseminate NCFR's policy-related activities, and a description of NCFR's policy-related activities. Additional research and policy briefs were in production at the end of 2024.In 2024, NCFR created one new resource collection, Public Scholarship Harassment Resources, and updated the Immigration and Families collection to include practitioner and policy implications, for review by internal audiences. Additional resources are continuously added to previous resource collections. Resource collections are a method to disseminate research such as NCFR journal articles, webinars, conference recordings, articles from NCFR Report and CFLE Network, and occasionally outside resources. NCFR offered Teaching Tuesdays for a second year. Teaching Tuesdays are an interactive event for NCFR members to learn and discuss academic pedagogy. Four Teaching Tuesdays were held during 2024. Events were titled: Using Reflexive Pedagogy to Enhance Student Learning, The Need for Cultural Humility in Classrooms, Visual Thinking Strategies, and Teaching Family Life Education Methodology. These free events averaged 38 registrants and 16 participants per event. NCFR published four issues each of its NCFR Report member magazine (containing Family Focus articles), and CFLE Network newsletter, which contain educational articles and resources for members and CFLEs pertaining to their professional interest areas. Membership services in 2024:NCFR also offered the Student Access Grant for a fifth year, supporting registration fees, one year of NCFR membership, and a $500 travel stipend to attend the 2024 NCFR annual conference. The grant was given to ten students from historically marginalized racial or ethnic populations, providing access and inclusion to the NCFR membership and conference. NCFR fundraised $18,954 from members to fund and support the 2024 Student Access Grant.For the fifth year, NCFR and David H. Olson, Ph.D. sponsored the annual $10,000 NCFR Olson Grant: Bridging Research, Theory, and Practice. The grant was established to enable projects that bridge research, theory, and practice in Family Science. In its inaugural year, NCFR awarded the first recipient of the NCFR Darling Family Life Education Research Initiative Grant. This grant awards $5,000 every other year to one awardee. Carol Darling established the grant to support Family Life Educators, researchers, and programs that often lack funding to conduct research needed to support and maintain their projects and services.The 2024 Honors Program recognized 26 graduating students in the Fall, Spring and Summer graduation terms. 23 volunteer member reviewers made this program possible.The 2024 CV and Resume Review Program reviewed 75 NCFR members' resumes and CVs with the support of 11 volunteer member reviewers.The 2024 Mentoring Academy created 13 mentor and mentee pairings for a two-year partnership starting at the 2024 NCFR Annual Conference in Bellevue and finishing at the 2025 NCFR Annual Conference in Baltimore.
