TETIAROA SOCIETY HELPS SUPPORT THE OPERATION OF AN ECOSTATION, LOCATED ON MOTU ONETAHI, ONE OF THE 12 ISLETS OF TETIAROA (33 MILES NORTH OF TAHITI, FRENCH POLYNESIA), AS A FACILITY ACCESSIBLE TO SCIENTISTS, VOLUNTEERS, CULTURAL ADVISORS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. IT ALSO SERVES AS A BASE FOR THE SOCIETY'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH, EDUCATION, AND CONSERVATION PROGRAMS. THE ECOSTATION IS A DYNAMIC AND POWERFUL TOOL IN OUR MISSION TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE INTERDEPENDENCE. DESIGNED AND BUILT TO LEAD PLATINUM STANDARDS, THE ECOSTATION ALLOWS SCIENTISTS AND STUDENTS TO BE INSPIRED BY TETIAROA'S UNIQUE, NATURAL ENVIRONMENT WHILE THEIR WORK IS INTEGRATED WITH IT. THE RESEARCH CONDUCTED AT THE ECOSTATION AND ON TETIAROA SERVES AS A LIVING CASE STUDY, WHERE THE LESSONS LEARNED CAN BE IMPLEMENTED LOCALLY AND APPLIED TO PLACES ACROSS THE GLOBE, CREATING A RIPPLE EFFECT OF SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION.RESEARCH AND PROGRAM ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED VIA THE ECOSTATION IN 2020 WERE:TARP ("TETIAROA ATOLL RESTORATION PROJECT"): THE GOAL OF THE TARP PROJECT IS TO REMOVE INVASIVE SPECIES AND RESTORE NATIVE SPECIES. IN ADDITION, THE GOAL IS TO RESTORE TETIAROA'S NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS. SCIENTISTS WORKED ON VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT THROUGHOUT 2020. TETIAROA SOCIETY WORKED WITH ISLAND CONSERVATION TO CARRY OUT RAT ERADICATION PROJECTS ON TWO MOTUS OF THE ATOLL.THE TETIAROA SOCIETY CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE PLAN (CASUP) ENVISAGES AN ATOLL WHERE THE TERRESTRIAL AND MARINE HABITATS HAVE BEEN RESTORED TO AS CLOSE TO THEIR ORIGINAL NATIVE FORM AS POSSIBLE. TO THAT END, THE TETIAROA ATOLL RESTORATION PROJECT (TARP) FOCUSES ON THE REMOVAL OF INVASIVE SPECIES AND RESTORATION OF NATIVE SPECIES. WE ARE CURRENTLY FOCUSING ON REMOVING THE PRIMARY THREAT TO THE ISLAND'S ECOSYSTEM-INVASIVE RATS. THE INITIAL PLAN FOR 2020 WAS TO REMOVE RATS FROM THE ENTIRE ATOLL BUT THE COVID PANDEMIC MADE THIS IMPOSSIBLE. HOWEVER, WITH THE CLOSING OF THE BRANDO FOR A FEW MONTHS, THE OPPORTUNITY AROSE TO DO A RAT ERADICATION ON MOTU ONETAHI AND HONUEA USING VOLUNTEER LABOR. THIS OPERATION, AND THE ONGOING GREEN SEA TURTLE MONITORING, WERE THE MAIN CONSERVATION PRIORITIES IN 2020.STUDY OF INTEGRATED CONTROL OF MOSQUITO: THIS PROJECT STARTED IN 2014, AND ITS AIM IS THE SUPPRESSION AND CONTROL OF MOSQUITOS ON ONETAHI THROUGH AN INTEGRATED APPROACH.OCEAN ACIDIFICATION AND CLIMATE RESEARCH: SCIENTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TETIAROA SOCIETY CONTINUED RESEARCH EFFORTS TO DETERMINE RATES OF CALCIFICATION, DISSOLUTION, PHOTOSYNTHESIS, AND RESPIRATION ON A VARIETY OF SPECIAL SCALES WITHIN THE ATOLL BY DEPLOYING SITU SENSORS THAT CONTINUOUSLY MEASURE PH, O2, SALINITY, TEMPERATURE, AND DEPTH. THEY COMBINED THESE ANALYSES WITH DISCRETE WATER SAMPLES COLLECTED ON A TWICE-DAILY BASIS OF THE MEASUREMENTS OF ALKALINITY, DIC, AND NUTRIENTS. ADDITIONALLY, PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF THE LAND AND REEF HEIGHTS WERE MEASURED WITH GPS SYSTEMS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF SEA LEVEL VARIATION. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROJECT.INVESTIGATION OF ECOLOGY OF REEF SHARKS: SCIENTISTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AND CRIOBE CONTINUED THEIR RESEARCH ON THE SHARKS USING THE LAGOON OF TETIAROA. THE RESEARCH HAS HELPED TO REVEAL THE STATUS AND ECOLOGICAL ROLES OF REEF SHARKS IN THE LAGOON OF TETIAROA, AND SET A BASELINE FOR FURTHER MONITORING AND COMPARISON WITH OTHER FRENCH POLYNESIAN SYSTEMS. BASELINE SEABIRD STUDY: SCIENTISTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON CONTINUED A MULTI-YEAR STUDY OF THE SEABIRDS ON TETIAROA. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO UPDATE THE BASELINE INFORMATION ON THE DEMOGRAPHY AND HEALTH OF SEABIRDS ON TETIAROA. THEY FOCUSED THEIR FIRST 2018 TRIP ON POPULATIONS ESTIMATES AND BREEDING STATUS OF THE SEABIRD SPECIES ON EACH OF TETIAROA'S MOTUS.COCONUT CRAB MONITORING: SCIENTISTS CONTINUED THEIR ANNUAL STUDY AND SURVEY OF COCONUT CRAB POPULATIONS ON TETIAROA. GREEN SEA TURTLE NESTING AND MONITORING: SCIENTISTS CONTINUED THEIR ANNUAL STUDY AND SURVEY OF SEA TURTLE POPULATIONS ON TETIAROA. THE BLUE CLIMATE INITIATIVE IS TETIAROA SOCIETY'S GLOBAL EFFORT TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE WITH OCEAN-RELATED SOLUTIONS. THIS INITIATIVE BRINGS TOGETHER SCIENTISTS, COMMUNITY LEADERS, ENTREPRENEURS, BUSINESS LEADERS AND INFLUENCERS TO ACCELERATE OCEAN-RELATED SOLUTIONS TO THE GREATEST ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS HUMANKIND HAS CONFRONTED. BCI'S WORK IN 2020 INCLUDED:PUBLICATION OF TRANSFORMATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE, OCEAN AND PLANET - IN 2020, BCI ASKED A QUESTION: WHAT WOULD WE DO WITH A BILLION DOLLARS TO DIRECT TOWARD THE MOST INNOVATIVE, IMPACTFUL SOLUTIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE, USING THE POWER OF THE OCEAN? THIS BOOK ANSWERS THAT QUESTION THROUGH THE INPUT OF OVER 60 WORLD-RENOWNED OCEAN EXPERTS WORKING IN SIX FOCUS AREAS: HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, FOOD AND NUTRITION, MARINE ENERGY AND TRANSPORTATION, MINERAL AND GENETIC RESOURCES, BIODIVERSITY AND NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS, AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM. TOGETHER THEY IDENTIFIED OVER 40 TRANSFORMATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.COMMUNITY AWARDS TO GRASSROOTS PROGRAMS - IN 2020, BCI SPONSORED A GLOBAL CHALLENGE ENTITLED "COMMUNITY AWARDS FOR OCEAN-RELATED CLIMATE SOLUTIONS." THE ISLAND'S STATUS AS A SANCTUARY ALLOWS THESE EFFORTS TO FLOURISH, PROMOTING LONG-TERM RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES.ONGOING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH HELPS MONITOR THE HEALTH OF THE ISLAND'S ECOSYSTEMS AND CONTRIBUTES TO A BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS. THE ISLAND'S ISOLATION PROVIDES AN INVALUABLE NATURAL LABORATORY WHERE RESEARCHERS CAN STUDY THE EFFECTS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN A PRISTINE CONTEXT, OFFERING INSIGHTS THAT CAN INFORM GLOBAL CONSERVATION EFFORTS.MOREOVER, THESE PROGRAMS ENGAGE LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND VISITORS, PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND FOSTERING A SENSE OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISLAND'S FUTURE.
