Parent and Community Education Program
Parent and Community Education We create and maintain a distribution list (newsletter) and social media presence through our parent and community education program to strengthen and expand outreach and education activities. The newsletter shares educational materials roughly 4-6 times per year with various activities and events that happen throughout the year, and media campaigns, which are approximately five days per week and sometimes multiple daily posts, focus on substance use prevention education, identifying resources and support, and ways to get involved in community activities. Through the online campaign, we reach thousands of youths, parents, and community members, tracking them for various grants we receive. During 2023, the student club implemented a new social media page focused on youth. In 2023, coalition members and youth hosted five booths at various community events, sharing education and resources with the different communities. There were also two parent and community-focused events where prevention programs referred to as the Family Code were shared with two school communities, reaching 150+ parents at each event. This hybrid event allowed easy access and sharing of the recorded events (500+).GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$39.6KCommunity Assessment and Strategic Planning
Community Assessment (ongoing) and Development & Strategic Framework Planning A program service accomplishment in 2023 was finalizing the data collection, analyzing results, and implementing training, programs, and services that reflect and support local assessment results. Data was collected from focus groups, interviews with local leaders and stakeholders, and results from state student health surveys administered in grades 6, 8, and 11. Also collected were school dropout rates, DUI/Wrecks from the police department, and alcohol license and special permit uses, to name a few. Extensive training for coalition and board members was completed as part of the Drug-Free Community Grant CADCA's National Coalition Academy, training for staff and coalition members focused on implementing the Strategic Prevention Framework to assess and plan coalition work. Through assessment, capacity, planning, implementation, and evaluation guided by cultural competence and sustainability, our coalition was able to assess local community needs to understand the current problem, so to implement a strategic plan through policy development, a communication plan, member recruitment (youth and adults), and identified evidence-based strategies and programs, with health equity considerations. We engaged community members by hosting in-person, virtual, and media events throughout the year for youth, parents, and community members ranging from 25-250 participants. We have created awareness in our local community as an organization that can help and support youth and families. CLA has established itself as a respected entity where people know they can get reliable and helpful information. This can be seen in the average number of youth participants each month and through the 2-3 phone calls, emails, and social media messages and comments asking for information or support.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$24.7KStudent Prevention Education Initiative
Student Prevention Education and Engagement A program initiative of Community Living Above is the Teen Advisory Board (TAB), a youth prevention education club which is a student-led group advocating for prevention education and awareness that helps change the social norms of how we speak about, ask, and find help for ourselves and others as it relates to substance use and mental health. The youth are comprised of students from 9th - 12th grade. Students advocate for peers and learn about things like risk and protective factors that make them vulnerable or resilient when faced with potential behavioral health concerns. In 2023, students planned and implemented two significant prevention education events, with roughly 250 students actively participating. Local, county, and state leaders were present, and a media campaign covered ten days and reached upwards of 1000+ youth. The students also partner with the local school to plan and implement monthly meetings to increase student knowledge about substance use prevention. The monthly attendance of these meetings averaged 75+ students. Several of the students were able to present at local city council meetings and were interviewed by media outlets on the importance of prevention education. One of the important items accomplished this year from the student program activities was the formal formation of the student group as an official club at the local high school. This recognition has opened the idea of prevention clubs at other schools. The students are incredibly proud of this accomplishment.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$60.5K
