Addressing Hygiene Poverty in Rhode Island
Amenity Aid’s program ensures low-income Rhode Island residents have the free, essential hygiene products they need but cannot afford and cannot acquire with SNAP benefits. We give residents, including BIPOC, low-income, and homeless communities access to necessities including soap, deodorant, shampoo, razors, toothbrushes, period products (particularly important, because 1 in 5 girls limits her activities due to lack of period products), and more. This program serves communities throughout Rhode Island through our agency partners. Amenity Aid is a collaborative organization, creating strong and long-lasting partnerships with community leaders and organizations who understand the unique and specific needs of the people they serve and can ensure those needs are met. Since 2013, we have distributed 316,549 products. In 2022 we distributed over 55,000 products to nearly 59,000 Rhode Islanders. Our program works with ten partner agencies, assuring a set amount of hygiene products are available for their organization to pick up monthly. Amenity Aid has ten primary distribution partners including Project Weber/RENEW, Federal Hill House, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Amos House, Sojourner House, Boys & Girls Club of Newport, Operation Stand Down RI, Lucy’s Hearth, House of Hope CDC, and St. Mary's Home for Children. In response to the pandemic we expanded our distribution of life-saving soap to all Rhode Island-based organizations. Thanks to the generous support from Bradford Soap Works, we provide free bar soap on a monthly basis to all collaborators during our monthly soap distribution days. Once registered to become a collaborator agency, the agencies will receive email notifications including instructions on how to sign up for upcoming soap distribution days. Collaborator agencies receive other hygiene essentials when Amenity Aid secures large in-kind donations.GeographiesRhode Island, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedFree goods distribution,Travelers' aidAge groups,Cultural Heritage,Ethnic and racial groups,Family relationships,Gender and sexual identity,Health,Religious groups,Social and economic status,Work status and occupations316.5K–
