Opera Workshop: Five Ways to Die
Our season kicked off on November 8 and 9, 2023 with a two-day workshop at the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) of the new opera Five Ways to Die. This work was commissioned by EiO and featured librettos from Joanie Brittingham, Jason Cady, Britt Hewitt, Marcella Murray and Melisa Tien and new music from composers Jason Cady, Anthony Gatto, Jesse Gelaznik, Seong Ae Kim, Del'Shawn Taylor. On January 13, 2024, we produced the second workshop for the new opera A Prize for Every Player with a libretto by celebrated author A.M. Homes based on her story by the same name. Composer and EiO Founder Aaron Siegel wrote 30 minutes of music for this opera which follows a family of four into a large department store for their weekly Sunday shop. The workshop performance took place in an unused storefront in Chelsea. On April 15, 2024, Experiments in Opera partnered with Works & Process for a single night performance of Act 1 of Phil Kline's new opera The Lives and Dreams of Nikola Tesla at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan. The opera featured films by Jim Jarmusch and singing by noted countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo.
