Youth Educational Excursions and Workshops
Recipients' Excursions: Among other excursions, our program participants attended a college tour. For many, college visits can be financially out of reach. To assist, students were given the opportunity to take part in organized fundraisers to raise money, which helped offset a portion of the fees. The following college campuses were visited: Bethune Cookman University, Valdosta State University, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, University of South Carolina, Benedict College, and South Carolina State University. Additionally, while visiting the colleges in Atlanta, Georgia, our participants also went to The National Center for Civil & Human Rights. One of the highlights of our various Environmental Responsibilities: Self & Community Workshop/Projects was our participants attended The 14th Annual Student Leadership Day, sponsored by the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute. Other attendees included doctors who care for the Miami Hurricanes and Miami Marlins. Students cultivated leadership skills through actionable insights from prolific athletes as well as business and community leaders. In addition, they earned community service hours for their active participation. Entrepreneurship Workshops: During 2023, the entrepreneurial bug not only bit our participants, but it also bit one of our longtime volunteer staff members. As a result of our parents seeing how well their teen children were performing, they asked our program if we would allow their younger children to attend our program as well. After much deliberation, and Board approval, we added to our programming a group now known as Pre-START. In order to provide this group with educational services, a new business was started, "Knowledge is Key". The founder, president, CEO of this business is none other than our Youth Coordinator. Additionally, as the result of the training she received from attending our entrepreneurial workshops, one of our alumni students started her on business in 2023. We helped her to come up with the name of her business, as well as we invited her to be a vendor at one of our evening events. Fiscal/Financial Literacy Workshops: Our program participated in Miami-Dade County Public School's Summer Youth Internship Program allowing 10 High School students to participate in a paid Internship program for 6 weeks. Additionally, we facilitated the process of helping the Interns to open a bank account at EdFed Educational Credit Union. Free Hot Meal Program: Our program provided free hot meals for our 20-25 student participants. Most of our student participants are a part of the State of Florida's free or reduced Lunch Program. Health & Fitness Sessions: Our Pre-START program participants attended a five-day session about water safety taught by Ms. Emma Guiteras. This was followed by safe swimming lessons at Carrollton of The Sacred Hears-Barat Campus. Additionally, they attended Shake-A-Leg Miami, where they participated in water activities such as canoeing, sailing, and snorkeling. Furthermore, S.T.A.R.T. participants learned about boat safety and took a test to be certified to operate watercraft. S.T.E.A.M. Activities: Our program placed special emphasis on this area during our 6-week START Program Summer "S.T.E.A.M. Camp." The camp was funded by The Children's Trust Program Enhancement Funds. Each week had a theme: Week 1 Science, Week 2: Technology, Week 3: Engineering, Week 4: Art, Week 5: Mathematics and finally Week 6 of the Camp was a floating week that had a combination of themed activities.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$93.5K
