Programs
Program 1 [2020]
In 2020, Food Equality Initiative (FEI) continued to live our mission and core values to serve low-income patients diagnosed with food allergies and celiac disease. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FEI made the transition from a pantry model and adopted a direct to door delivery model. FEI built an online market place called the Free-From-Market. Clients were given a $155 voucher that they were able to access food from the Free-From-Market. This increased the quality and number of products available to our clients. FEI provided over $216,233 in healthy "free-from" foods to clients enrolled in our nutrition assistance program and increased the number of people served by 240%. With increased access to the right foods, clients were able to improve their quality of life. Our partnerships with Kansas University Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital strengthen our evidence-based approach as the first nutrition intervention for patients with food allergies and celiac disease.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$317.3KProgram 2 [2020]
The Advocacy program serves as a voice for low-income individuals diagnosed with food allergies and celiac disease through raising awareness, civic engagement, and community organizing. In April 2020, FEI had their first article in a major journal published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice titled, "Food Insecure and Allergic in a Pandemic: A Vulnerable Population". FEI also strengthened research efforts through our science alliance to include Northwestern University, Texas Children's, and Stanford University. FEI also launched our webinar series "For the Health" to raise awareness of racial and economic disparities in food allergy and celiac disease.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$45.3KProgram 3 [2020]
Through the education program, clients are instructed in how to interpret food labels and ingredients, how to thrive with food allergy diagnosis, and are informed on where to shop for allergen-free and gluten-free foods. In 2020, FEI launched Free-From magazine to provide client centered education. This lifestyle magazine shares the health journey of one of our clients, recipes, tips from experts and patients.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$90.7K
