Cedar Root Gathering: A group of 19 Okanogan Basketweaver Members participated in this project of going into the field and gathering cedar roots. We learned what size cedar root to look for, how to clean, split, and process the cedar root to make baskets. The knowledge of gathering the materials to make your weaving projects has almost been lost here on the Colville Indian Reservation. We also learned how important it is to know how to store and process the material.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$5.2KProgram 3 [2024]
There were 25 participants. Participants were able to attend the workshop in person or by Zoom. Hemp and yarn were used to make a basket that measured 6" x 10" with the design of the mountains going around the basket. The participants also learned how to weave changing colors, how to line, and sew buckskin on the top of the basket to finish the basket. Weaving kits, which included a pattern, were provided so the participants could also teach others to make this basket.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$9.5K
