Program 1 [2020]
TENDING THE MERWIN PALM TREE COLLECTION: In 2020, the Merwin Conservancy assumed stewardship of the Merwin Palm Tree Collection, employing two contract gardeners to care for, protect, catalog, and report on a diverse collection of palms. The collection is widely considered to be one of the largest and most diverse private palm collections. It is a core tenet of our organization's mission to ensure the ecological integrity of this collection, and to safeguard the health of endangered and threatened species within it.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$80.3KProgram 2 [2020]
ART & ECOLOGY IN-PERSON & ONLINE PRORAMMING: In 2020, the Merwin Conservancy staff planned, organized and held two in-person events as part of our Arts & Ecology Speaker Series. Both events-one on Maui and one on Oahu-featured U.S. Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo, on the islands of Maui and O'ahu. These events were sold out, filling venues with a combined capacity accommodating 530 guests. This event's overall revenue was bolstered by a corporate sponsorship from Aqua Aston Hospitality, and a patrons program, through which individual donors provided additional support of the series. Other in-person events planned in 2020 were cancelled due to Covid restrictions. However, the Conservancy pivoted to offer new online programming with the creation of The Sitting Room, a video installation made in collaboration with artists Susannah Sayler and Edward Morris. The Sitting Room transports visitors to W.S. Merwin's meditation dojo and garden shed deep in the palm forest.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$28.5KProgram 3 [2020]
INTEPRETIVE PLANNING: In 2020, the Merwin Conservancy retained the services of an experienced nonprofit planning consultant in order to undertake an inclusive interpretive planning process. TMC engaged more than one hundred community members in discussions to help shape our programmatic vision. The process was originally designed to engage stakeholders by way of a series of in-person community conversations and interviews. However, due to Covid restrictions, we re-designed the process to engage participants online. Over the course of the year, we conducted fifteen group conversations and oral history interviews, generating in-depth feedback to inform our growth.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$28.8K
