LGBTQIA+ Immigrant Legal Services
In 2023, The LGBTAP served 841 LGBTQIA+ immigrants and far exceeded the projected number of 700. These include pending and new cases as well as legal consultations. Have 87 new asylum cases (72 affirmative and 15 defensive) Keep providing our services 100% free to our clients, including 100% pro-bono legal representation to TGNCI defensive cases at SF and Sacramento Immigration Court. Organize 20 Volunteer Days at our Castro Office. Host 3 fellows and 2 interns in total from OCEIA DreamSF, Legal Services Funders Network and University of San Francisco. Hire one new staff (Legal Assistant).On March 2, 2023, we had our first win from the TGNCI Defensive Grant. Our client is a Trans woman from El Salvador, and she has been through several attacks, assaults, and threats, including getting stabbed by a knife, due to her gender identity. Thanks to the support from OCEIA, and the hard work of our TGNCI Staff Attorney Jhon Tesoro and paralegal Rachael Stronach, our client is now approved and can live her authentic life in the USA in safety. Receive TDOV Forerunner Award in April 2023.Finalize our internal Staff Manuals through MOHCD Capacity Building Grant.On Monday, June 12, 2023, the SF Immigrants Rights Commission awarded our ED Okan Sengun and The LGBT Asylum Project due to our work on behalf of immigrant communities with the Vera Haile Champion of Justice Award, in honor of Immigrant Rights Commissioner Vera Haile. Achieve a significant milestone when our organization and staff were featured in an ABC7 Allies in Action story, garnering statewide coverage. The increased visibility has helped us reach and serve a broader audience, making a positive impact on the lives of more individuals. Successfully retain of a trans family unit in Sacramento to provide them with comprehensive assistance tailored to their unique needs.Receive Proclamation from the City of SF which declares Nov 18th as "San Francisco Transgender Immigrants Day".
