THE OKLAHOMA ENGINEERING FOUNDATION (OEF) HOSTS ANDSPONSORS THREE PROGRAMS: MATHCOUNTS, ENGINEERING FAIR, AND FUTURE CITY ANDPROVIDES SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS EACH CALENDAR YEAR.OEF HOSTS 5 REGIONAL MATHCOUNTS COMPETITIONS AND ONE STATE COMPETITION ANDALSO SPONSORS THE WINNING TEAM (A TOTAL OF 4 STUDENTS, ONE COACH, 2MATHCOUNTS STATEWIDE CHAIRS, AND ONE MATHCOUNTS STATEWIDE COORDINATOR TOTHE NATIONAL COMPETITION). THE MATHCOUNTS COMPETITION SERIES PROVIDES 6THTHROUGH 8TH GRADE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SOLVE HIGH LEVEL MATHPROBLEMS ON AN INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM BASIS. OEF IS WORKING TO INCREASE MATHLITERACY AMONG ALL STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE STATE, AND MATHCOUNTS IS ONEAVENUE TO ENSURE STUDENTS HAVE SOLID MATH FOUNDATION AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLLEVEL. IN ADDITION TO INCREASING MATH LITERACY, MATHCOUNTS ALSO PROVIDESPROBLEM SOLVING, COMMUNICATION, AND TEAMWORK CONCEPTS TO EACH PARTICIPANT.THE MATHCOUNTS COMPETITION SERIES IS A NATIONAL PROGRAM STARTED BY THENATIONAL SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS AND LATER DEVELOPED INTO ITS OWNFOUNDATION. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF COMPETITION MATERIALS, OEF IS SOLELYRESPONSIBLE FOR THE COMPETITIONS WITHIN OKLAHOMA. THIS PROGRAM GIVESACADEMIC STUDENTS A CHANCE TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR MATH SKILLS AND BECOME"MATHLETES" WITHIN THE COMPETITION SERIES. EACH SCHOOL IS ALLOWED ONEOFFICIAL TEAM OF FOUR STUDENTS AND UP TO SIX ADDITIONAL INDIVIDUALCOMPETITORS FOR THEIR DESIGNATED REGIONAL COMPETITION. STUDENTS COMPETE INSEVERAL ROUNDS OF MATHEMATIC WORD PROGRAMS USING EVERYDAY SITUATIONS. TODETERMINE THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS FOR THE COMPETITION, THE TOP 10 STUDENTSARE CHOSEN TO COMPETE IN A COUNTDOWN ROUND WHERE STUDENTS FACE EACH OTHERONE-ON-ONE TO SEE WHO CAN ANSWER THE MOST QUESTIONS CORRECTLY, HAVING 45SECONDS PER QUESTION. THE WINNING TEAMS IN THE REGIONAL COMPETITION AND THETOP FOUR INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS, FROM A NON-WINNING TEAM, ADVANCE TO THESTATE COMPETITION. THE STATE COMPETITION FOLLOWS THE SAME FORMAT AS THEREGIONAL COMPETITION WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT THE TOP FOUR INDIVIDUALPARTICIPANTS (NOT TEAM) GO TO THE NATIONAL COMPETITION. ADDITIONALLY,INDIVIDUAL MATHLETES WHO SCORE WELL ON THE WRITTEN EXAM AND DURING THECOUNTDOWN ROUND ALSO HAVE A CHANCE TO ADVANCE TO STATE IF THERE IS SPACE TOACCOMMODATE THEM AT THE DESIGNATED STATE COMPETITION VENUE. IN 2015, OEFWAS ABLE TO OFFER AT LEAST TWO ADDITIONAL HIGH PERFORMING STUDENTS FROMEACH REGION THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE STATE COMPETITION IN AN EFFORT TOPROVIDE ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND COMPETITION AMONG ALLADVANCING MATHLETES.THE ANNUAL OEF ENGINEERING FAIR INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE WORLD OFENGINEERING, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, INNOVATION, AND ROBOTICSALL FUNDAMENTALELEMENTS OF A SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM) EDUCATION.HISTORICALLY, THROUGH A TOTAL OF SEVEN UNIQUE COMPETITIONS, STUDENTS AREGIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD, CREATE, INNOVATE, AND ENGINEER PROJECTS -PUTTING HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES WITHIN THEIR GRASPS. FAIR CONTESTS ARE: BRIDGEBUILDING (BUILDING A BRIDGE FROM TOOTHPICKS AND GLUE AND LOAD TESTING IT TOSEE HOW MUCH PRESSURE IT CAN WITHSTAND), EIFFEL TOWER CONTEST, (BUILDING ANEIFFEL TOWER OUT OF PLASTIC DRINKING STRAWS), PING PONG BALL LAUNCHER,RUBBER BAND POWERED VEHICLE, AND WACKY WONDER WORKS (DESIGNING AND BUILDINGA COMPLICATED MULTI-STEP MACHINE TO A SIMPLE TASK). OEF HOSTS ANDUNDERWRITES THE ENTIRE EVENT, INCLUDING MUSEUM ADMITTANCE, CURRICULUM,MATERIALS, TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENTS (IF FUNDING ALLOWS), AND AWARDS. THROUGHTHE SCIENCE MUSEUM OKLAHOMA ADMITTANCE PROVIDED BY OEF, STUDENTS AREEXPOSED TO THE MULTITUDE OF STEM EXHIBITS AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM OKLAHOMA,ALONG WITH ENGINEERING AMBASSADORS TO DISCUSS STEM EDUCATION/CAREERPOSSIBILITIES WITH THE STUDENTS.EACH FALL OEF PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE SOPHOMORESENTERING THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, WHICH IS TYPICALLY THE YEAR THE STUDENT BEGINSTHEIR ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL CURRICULUM. THE NUMBER OFSCHOLARSHIPS ARE DEPENDENT ON FUNDING AND THE NUMBER OF RENEWALSCHOLARSHIPS CURRENTLY ON THE BOOKS. THE SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT IS $1,000 EACHSEMESTER FOR 4 SEMESTERS. THE OEF SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT IS MANAGED THROUGHTHE OKLAHOMA CITY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND THE DISBURSEMENT FROM THE FUNDSIS USED TO COVER EXISTING AND NEW SCHOLARSHIPS.OEF UNDERSTANDS THE VALUE OF PARTNERSHIP. WE SUPPORT THE OKLAHOMA FUTURECITY COMPETITIONS THROUGH THE EXECUTIVES DIRECTOR'S TIME HELPING TO PLAN,ORGANIZE, AND IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM. OEF PROVIDES STEM EDUCATION RESOURCESFOR TEACHER WORKSHOPS THROUGH A PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND THECENTRAL OK STEM ALLIANCE. . OEF IS AN INTEGRAL PARTNER IN THE EFFORT TOCREATE A CENTRAL OK REGIONAL STEM ALLIANCE. THESE OPPORTUNITIES WILLFURTHER INCREASE THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE MORE STEM EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIESACROSS THE STATE AND THE METROPOLITAN OKC AREA.FINALLY, IN AUGUST 2016, THE CENTRAL OKLAHOMA STEM ALLIANCE (COSTEMA) WASDESIGNATED AS A REGIONAL SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM)ALLIANCE BY GOVERNOR MARY FALLIN. THROUGH THE DESIGNATION PROCESS, OEF WASIDENTIFIED AS A KEY ORGANIZATION TO THE SUCCESS OF THE REGIONAL PROGRAMSCOSTEMA BUILDS. THE COSTEMA REGION COVERS ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT FEED INTOFRANCIS TUTTLE TECHNOLOGY CENTER AND METROTECHNOLOGY CENTERS, INCLUDING BUTNOT LIMITED TO OKLAHOMA CITY, EDMOND, CRESCENT, CASHION, MILLWOOD, WESTERNHEIGHTS, AND DEER CREEK PUBLIC SCHOOLS. OEF DOES NOT PROVIDE COSTEMA WITHFINANCIAL BACKING, BUT THE OEF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SERVES AS THE COSTEMAEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AS THE STEM INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS OFFERED BY BOTHORGANIZATIONS INTERSECT. ALL DONATIONS RECEIVED BY OEF FOR COSTEMA PURPOSESARE TREATED AS ANY GRANT WOULD BE WITH THOSE FUNDS DEDICATED TO COSTEMAPROGRAMMING NEEDS. The Oklahoma Engineering Fair OEF pioneered the Oklahoma Engineering Fair in 1981, to give middle school and high school students a chance to become familiar with the engineering field. At the time, it was a new concept for students. Today, the fair is held every spring at Science Museum of Oklahoma. It brings together students, teachers, professors, engineering societies and the business community to give students an introduction to engineering and related principles. Students are also given the opportunity to showcase their creativity in engineering construction and design through various categories of competition including a bridge competition; rubber band powered vehicle competition; drone competition; tower competition; electric motor competition; ping pong launcher competition and wacky wonders competition. Prestigious cash prizes are given to winners. In recent years, we have expanded the competition to include a software challenge and an animals and engineering challenge. MATHCOUNTS Oklahoma In 1983, OEF introduced Oklahoma to the national MATHCOUNTS program, the longest-running national mathematics competition for middle school students. Open to all middle schools in the state, the Oklahoma MATHCOUNTS program has impacted thousands of middle school students over four decades. (This does not include the countless students impacted by the free curriculum we provide to schools.) It is a premier program that fosters highly advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills that students need to become innovators and leaders and to help keep Oklahoma competitive in an increasingly technology-driven economy.MATHCOUNTS Oklahoma holds three to five regional MATHCOUNTS competitions every year in coordination with local schools and universities. The top winners from each region advance to the state competition. The state competition brings together dozens of Oklahoma's top mathletes who compete in all-day rounds. The four top finishers take the four highly coveted positions on Oklahoma's national MATHCOUNTS team. This team represents Oklahoma at the national competition. ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThe Oklahoma Engineering Foundation provides annual scholarships to Oklahoma students pursuing engineering degrees. The program promotes interest in engineering careers, supports academic achievement and helps strengthen the states future engineering workforce. OEF manages the application process, reviews submissions through a volunteer committee of professional engineers and awards scholarships funded by partner organizations and individual donors. Scholarships are granted directly to students enrolled in accredited engineering programs.YOUTH AMBASSADOR BOARDThe Oklahoma Engineering Foundation operates a Youth Ambassador Board that engages high school students in leadership, engineering awareness and community service. The program introduces students to engineering careers, provides mentorship from professional engineers and offers hands-on STEM outreach opportunities. Ambassadors assist with OEF events, promote engineering education in their schools and communities and develop leadership and communication skills through structured activities and service projects.LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC AFFAIRSThe Oklahoma Engineering Foundation monitors state and federal policy issues that affect engineering education, workforce development and STEM programming in Oklahoma. OEF provides nonpartisan information to policymakers, educates stakeholders on the importance of engineering and supports legislation that strengthens STEM education and professional pathways.
