National Whistleblower Center

Programs
Program 1 [2020]
In its Legal Assistance Program, the National Whistleblower Center (NWC) educates whistleblowers about their legal rights and assists them in finding qualified attorneys. NWC educates whistleblowers by speaking at a wide array of workshops, conferences, and webinars, and by disseminating reports, factsheets, and other materials through partner organizations as well as through its website, email, and social media. In some cases, with precedent-setting potential or otherwise of great significance, NWC provides whistleblowers with communications and policy support. Whistleblowers benefitting from NWCs support include, for example, the anonymous whistleblowers alleging deceptive statements by Facebook about terror and hate content on its website; NWC secured favorable publicity in the media about the whistleblowers petitions before the Securities and Exchange Commission and educated key members of Congress about the whistleblowers concerns. In its Policy Advocacy Program, the NWC advances policies in the U.S. and around the world that protect and reward whistleblowers. NWC provides nonpartisan advice and assistance to a wide array of decision makers in legislatures, as well as in executive branch agencies, on how to strengthen whistleblower protections and rewards and how to respond to proposals submitted by others. NWC played a key role in drafting and supporting major whistleblower legislation such as the Dodd-Frank Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act. In addition to working with legislatures and agencies, NWC regularly advocates for strong whistleblower policy in the media and at conferences and workshops. NWC also educates members of the public and enlists them to communicate their concerns to policy makers, through its Action Alert Network. The network is comprised of over two hundred thousand concerned citizens who have expressed interest in staying apprised of whistleblower news and adding their voices to the cause of protecting whistleblowers. In its Celebrating Whistleblowers Program, NWC educates decision makers and the public about the importance of whistleblowers to preserving democracy and the rule of law. NWC carries out a wide array of educational activities ranging from TV appearances to carrying out briefings for foreign dignitaries arranged by the State Department. In addition, each year NWC organizes a National Whistleblower Appreciation Day which is widely attended by prominent whistleblowers, whistleblower advocates, top policy makers from Congress and federal agencies to honor the contributions of whistleblowers to democracy and the rule of law.
