The Washington Chorus Performances
The Washington Chorus completed a robust schedule of performances in its sixty-third season under the baton of Artistic Director Dr. Eugene Rogers. Activities included four mainstage productions, as well as additional appearances as a guest of the region's leading performing arts organizations. There were four mainstage productions in the 2023-2024 season. In November 2023, we presented the first of two joint productions with National Philharmonic Orchestra, "UNIVERSAL LONGINGS," at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland. The concert celebrated compositional voices of both the past and present, meant to demonstrate the power of song. The program included the East Coast premiere of composer James Lee III's 2023 Breaths of Universal Longings and Venezuelan composer Antonio Estvez's 1954 Cantata Criolla. In December 2023, we presented DC's beloved holiday tradition, "A CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS," with one performance at the Music Center at Strathmore in Maryland and four performances at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in DC. All five performances sold out.In March 2024, we presented the second of two joint productions with National Philharmonic Orchestra, "L'ETERNAL," at the Music Center at Strathmore. The concert celebrated the sacred choral works of Lili Boulanger, Igor Stravinsky, and Ludwig van Beethoven, showcasing how each composer explored faith and spirituality using their own unique voice. In June 2024 we presented "ELIJAH REIMAGINED" at the Kennedy Center in DC with Grammy Award-winning baritone Will Liverman in the title role and custom projections by Camilla Tassi to add visual spectacle to the production. The University of Michigan Chamber Choir and the Children's Chorus of Washington were also part of the musical forces for this production. Following the DC performance, members of the Chorus and Liverman traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for two sold-out performances of the production. This year also included the continuation of our high school SIDE BY SIDE program, where The Washington Chorus shares the stage with the next generation of choral singers. Each year, the Side by Side program selects up to two outstanding local youth choruses to partner with The Washington Chorus for the unique experience of rehearsing and performing alongside a world-class symphonic chorus on the Kennedy Center and Strathmore Concert Hall stages. During the Candlelight Christmas concerts, the youth choruses perform their own set of music as well as sing within full chorus. This year featured GenOUT Youth Chorus and the Takoma Academy Camerata.Guest appearances this season were numerous. In July 2023, the Chorus joined the National Symphony Orchestra at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in two productions, first "THE PLANETS" suite by Gustav Holst and second "STUDIO GHIBLI," a program of video game music. In April 2024, the Chorus again joined the National Symphony Orchestra, this time at the Kennedy Center in DC, for two performances of the FAURE REQUIEM under the direction of Bernard Labadie. And finally, the Chorus once again planned and headlined "JOYFULLY TOGETHER," a festival of choral ensembles from around the National Capital Region, with musical guest Santino Fontana, at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in June 2024.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$1.3MProgram 1 [2025]
There were five mainstage productions in the 2024-2025 season. We opened the season on a high note with the historic performance of "Echoes of America" with the National Symphony Orchestra, featuring Washington Chorus Artistic Director Eugene Rogers at the podium. This was the first time in TWC history that the National Symphony Orchestra has invited our Artistic Director to conduct one of their season performances. Our family-favorite tradition of "A Candlelight Christmas" at the Kennedy Center and Strathmore in December welcomed record-breaking audiences, with five sold-out performances. The Chorus presented "Stand the Storm" with National Philharmonic, in March to rave reviews. The season ended with appearances as guest artists with the National Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven's MISSA SOLEMNIS and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for Verdi's AIDA.
