Empowering the next generation of global leaders through Model United Nations - Using original curriculum, year-round programming, and Model UN simulations, Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) program prepares the next generation of global citizens by engaging middle and high school students across the DMV region each year in a comprehensive global education experience. GCDC is particularly focused on expanding its programming to underserved youth at public and Title 1 schools and works in partnership with UN and government agencies. This past year the program was adapted to digital platforms and was able to executive a successful Model UN Conference with remarks from Secretary of State Blinken and the former Youth Observer to the UN. Bringing professional development opportunities to students and young professionals - Over 50% of UNA-NCA membership is comprised of young professionals and students. UNA-NCA provides a unique forum for learning about international issues, professional development, and mentoring opportunities. Celebrating UN Day with high level programs - Every year UNA-NCA commemorates the anniversary of the United Nations through special programming involving high-level speakers who engage in a discussion of relevant issues such as children in the digital world, climate change and human rights. Last fall, UNA-NCA organized and supported UN75 consultations and brought UNDP Assistant Administrator to discuss progress in implementing the 2030 agenda and presented its advocacy award to Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Graduate Fellows Program - The Graduate Fellows Program (GFP) is a volunteer-led, cost-free initiative that brings together a diverse group of graduate students enrolled at Washington area universities in a semester-long exploration of the UN. GFP's cohort size has been expanded from 25 to 36 Fellows for the virtual 2021 semester and a new curriculum highlights how the UN is responding to COVID-19. Human Rights Day Awards - Each December, UNA-NCA hosts its Human Rights Awards Reception commemorating the UN General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by presenting awards to individuals and organizations that have made substantial contributions in the field of human rights globally and locally. Last December, the program was held virtually bringing over 200 participants. Advocacy - The Advocacy program engages the general public, policy experts and elected officials in a wide array of initiatives to support U.S. leadership in the UN. In 2020, Advocacy engaged 960 unique attendees from 24 states and 11 countries in its new 10-part "Coffee Chat" series exploring the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, held 25 virtual meetings with congressional offices, and developed a suite of advocacy materials, including a new blog publication, "UNA-NCA Snapshots" In 2021, Advocacy is planning next-steps for its SDG-NCA initiative.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$73.6KGlobal Classrooms DC Program
Empowering the next generation of global leaders through Model United Nations Using an original curriculum, year-round programming, and Model UN simulations, Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) program prepares the next generation of global citizens by engaging middle and high school students across the DMV region in a comprehensive global education experience. GCDC reached 1335 students and 70 educators across 61 schools during the 2023-2024 school year and is focused upon increasing the participation of students enrolled at Title 1 schools (currently account for 17.6% of all GCDC participants). Bringing professional development opportunities to students and young professionals Over 60% of UNA-NCA membership is comprised of young professionals and students. UNA-NCA's Young Professionals Program (YPP) provides a unique forum for learning about international issues, engaging in professional development, and participating in mentoring opportunities. The YPP's career dinners is the signature program, engaging students, young and mid-career professionals with field experts in a variety of areas. Advocating for the UN and its agencies The Advocacy program engages senior leaders and the public alike in various initiatives to support U.S. leadership in the UN. This includes training and outreach to congressional leaders as well as local advocacy initiatives. UNA-NCA successfully advocated for the passage of local legislation that embraces the UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women in the Greater Washington area. Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals The Global Goals at Home (GGH) program utilizes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework for localizing and contextualizing impact across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The program's interactive platform offers stakeholders new ways of collaborating, exchanging resources, and advancing their shared goals. GGH has secured over 50 partner organizations interested in using the program's platform. GGH started a partnership collaboration with Accenture, Inc. Celebrating UN Day with high-level programming Each year, UNA-NCA commemorates the October anniversary of the United Nations through special programming involving high-level speakers who engage in a discussion of relevant issues. Deepening graduate students' understanding of the UN The Graduate Fellows Program (GFP) guides graduate students from through a semester-long exploration of the UN. The program engages graduate students from DMV-area universities in a weekly seminar alongside senior U.S. and UN officials to discuss pressing UN-related issues.
