Adventures in LearningAdventures in Learning (AIL) is a lifelong learning program held quarterly (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). It is focused on helping older adults continue to learn, discover, and grow in an atmosphere of friendship. Our sessions are led by volunteer class instructors who use their special interests and backgrounds to enrich lives and keep minds strong and vibrant.Travel AdventuresTravel Adventures program is a vibrant initiative tailored for older adults seeking exciting journeys and lasting memories. Each day presents an opportunity to explore diverse destinations through our monthly array of day trips and local outings, from scenic nature walks to cultural excursions and culinary experiences, all designed to showcase the beauty of our surroundings. Beyond discovering captivating locales, our program fosters new connections and friendships among like-minded individuals who share a passion for discovery. As we navigate winding roads and uncover hidden gems, the Travel Adventures Program becomes a gateway to rejuvenation and vitality, encouraging everyone to embrace the spirit of adventure and celebrate life through every outingrediscovering the world, making new friends, and reveling in the joy of exploration.Essential TransportationThe Essential Transportation program is designed to ensure that individuals can easily meet their healthcare and daily needs. Volunteer drivers provide their own vehicles to assist individuals 55+ in getting to medical and other essential need appointments. Transportation is available throughout Mecklenburg County.Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)SHIIP is a program of the N.C. Department of Insurance that offers free guidance to Medicare beneficiaries who need more information about or assistance with their insurance coverage, how Medicare works, what is covered, and what to do next. The Shepherds Center of Charlotte is the sole coordinating site for Mecklenburg County. As the Mecklenburg County coordinating site for SHIIP.Tax-Aide ProgramShepherd's Center of Charlotte partners with AARP to provide free tax filing assistance. From February to April, we serve countless older adults, particularly those with lower to moderate income, with our free tax preparation. Handy HelperThe Handy Helper program assists with minor home repairs, ensuring that older adults' living spaces remain secure, accessible, and stress-free.
