Baxter's Pond Stewardship Initiative
General: Baxter's Pond in the Barbara Johnson Park & Preserve is a refuge for wildlife and an essential element of the filtration system that keeps Manhasset Bay clean of debris. The entire town of Port Washington, NY (with a population of over 16,000 residents) benefits from having access to a clean Pond and Park. An even broader population benefits from having Manhasset Bay kept clean, as it is a direct inlet to the Long Island Sound. Members of the Baxter's Pond Foundation have volunteered to serve as stewards and advocates for the Pond and Park - the Foundation relies on donations from the community to enable these efforts. The Foundation's successful advocacy with Nassau County continues to result in the dredging of the catchment basin leading into the Pond, removing built-up sedimentation and debris that flows from the upper roadways into the creek and into the catchment basin. In the past year, our board members and other volunteers held four park clean-ups to remove trash from the Park's walkways and gardens and from the Pond itself. Funds that have accumulated are set to be used to fund an ecological project that will further improve the Pond and the Park.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$23.3KShore-scaping Project
Shore-scaping project: In spring 2022 and again in early autumn, Baxter's Pond Foundation continued its multi-year "Shore-scaping Plan", installing native plants and removing invasive ones with the use of a specific grant from Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District. Fees incurred included the cost of plantings and the cost of labor associated with landscape ecologists and technicians. Although the costs for this project were incurred and paid in 2022, the corresponding grant from Nassau County of $6,941 was not received until 2023.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$0Spring Garden Awareness Event
