Land Conservation Initiatives
Land Conservation: 2022 was a robust year for our Land Resources program. We conducted annual monitoring of our 9 fee-simple properties and 23 conservation easements as well as took on a 24th conservation easement in partnership with Olivette Riverside Community and Farm. This new conservation easement protects 16.63 acres of healthy forest, steep slope, and riparian buffer near the French Broad River in northern Buncombe County and safeguards 450 linear feet along Newfound Creek; two North Carolina Heritage Program-priority species: Eastern Hemlock and Riverbank Wild RyeGeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$556.3KWater Quality Protection Programs
Water Quality: In 2022, our Watershed Resources Program had an impactful year of community engagement and on-the-ground projects to protect water quality and promote climate resilience in the French Broad River Watershed. Through our WaterRICH stormwater education program, we distributed 50 rain barrels to Buncombe County residents and led 20 participants in a hands-on workshop to install a rain garden that will protect Lake Tomahawk from polluted runoff. 66 storm drains were adopted by residents of Asheville as part of our Adopt- A-Storm Drain program.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided––Environmental Education Programs
Education: In 2022 our education programs continued to provide free and accessible opportunities for students throughout WNC to connect with their environment. Our in-school programming brought aquatic ecology lessons to 42 different schools, engaging a total of 4,360 students. We also ran 4 weeks of summer camp where we explored the watershed with 48 campers, 20% of which were provided with a full scholarship. Given the success of our in-school programs we started the process of hiring a new educator to help us expand our offerings into the afterschool space.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided––
