Environmental Advocacy And Protection
We helped put CalFIRE on notice that a broad segment of the public wants that agency to prepare a revised management plan reflecting meaningful co-management of Jackson Demonstration State Forest with the tribes for which the area is culturally central, to accompany this revised plan with an Environmental Impact Report, and to halt all logging at Jackson until these objectives are attained. We generated communications to federal officials in support of strengthened federal rules to protect mature and old-growth forests; we believe this helped to result in stronger draft rules than would otherwise have been promulgated. We helped to sideline federal H.R. 8168, which would have damaged environmental laws in the name of saving giant sequoias. The bill did not pass.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJun 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$389.2KProgram 1 [2025]
We generated emails and letters that helped to defeat a scheme to establish for the first time a forest-destructive industry in California that would have exploited the state's forests to manufacture and export wood pellets for overseas electricity generation. On multiple fronts we opposed weakening of federal mature and old-growth forest protections and called for them to be strengthened. This targeted primarily the two largest U.S. land-management agencies with forest holdings under their jurisdiction. We pushed the Forest Service to revise and simplify the system (CARA) through which the public submits input on agency decisions, as provided by the law. We generated grassroots messages to save and strengthen the successful and forest-protective Northwest Forest Plan.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJun 1, 2024 – May 31, 2025Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$248.2K
