Breath of Life Archive Institute
Breath of Life Archive Institute for California Indigenous Languages. In even years, such as 2020, we host this week-long workshop at UC Berkeley. Up to 80 participants attend: 60 Community Researchers and 20 Linguistic Partners, who work one-on-one to access to the University archives through coordinated visits. Participants are accepted to the Institute through an application process and are shown how to utilize the archived materials that are housed in the various collections. Each team works with their Linguistic Partner to gain a better understanding of their language structure and focus on completing a final project which is presented at the end of the week. This program serves about 60 California Indigenous community members throughout California and about 20 Linguistics students or professors, 5-10 volunteers, and about 5-10 UC Berkeley staff or co-organizers, for an estimated total of 100 participants. For 2020, we revised the in-person Institute to an online platform and hosted 60 attendees, offering technical assistance to the attendees who needed help with joining us online, and we supported guest speakers and Linguistic Partners to work with the attendees.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2020 – Jun 30, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$54.6KMaster Apprentice Language Learning Program
Master Apprentice Language Learning Program (MAP) is our core program. For the last several years we have supported 10-15 Master Apprentice teams of 2 who are working on distinct Indigenous languages. Teams attend two workshops annually to be trained in language immersion approaches and are mentored by someone who has gone through the 3 year program in the past. The mentor(s) work with the team and advises them through the process. The masters and apprentices are supported with monthly funding to participate in the program, which is intended to cover supplies needed for their work together. In 2020 we moved most services to an online platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic but continued to provide some teams that could still work together with their monthly stipends. The program directly affects up to 15 master speakers, up to 15 apprentices, up to 4 contracted mentors and one employee, the program assistant, for a total of 35 participants.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2020 – Jun 30, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$54.6KFamily Language Program
Family Language Program: A sub-program and extension of the Master Apprentice program which supports families with approaches to language immersion and supports them with a mentor and training. This program supports a total of 50 participants. In 2020, the program was limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not as much activity occurred as in previous years, but we continued to support the teams remotely with care packages and online training.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2020 – Jun 30, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$29.9K
