Humane Society Animal Care Program
In 2024, the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs cared for over 450 pets who entered the shelter. The organization found homes for 197 cats and dogseach one spayed or neutered as needed, vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for any illnesses. An additional 60 pets were transferred to larger no-kill shelters where they were successfully adopted. Another 119 stray cats and dogs were reunited with their families.A total of 594 spay/neuter surgeries were performed, 404 for community animals through various voucher programs for $33,659 and an additional 40 pets seen for emergency medical care for over $7200.HSPS hosted two successful low-cost vaccine clinics, providing core vaccines to more than 200 community pets. Through its food bank program, HSPS distributed over 12,000 pounds of free pet food to people in need within the community.The shelter floors were resurfaced and walls painted enhancing comfort and safety for the dogs. A new Shelter software database program was installed, with little expense increase, allowing for better, more effective tracking length of stay and progress and status of shelter programs and animals.A new donor software program was installed, with no expense increase, to improve fundraising effectiveness and donor communications. Training was provided in enhanced enrichment and behavior programs with the goals of reducing Length of stay, improving quality of life in the shelter for our pets, and helping animals acclimate to their new homes.
