LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM: IN 2020, THE LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM PROVIDED A RANGE OF FREE AND LOW-COST LEGAL SERVICES IN KING, KITSAP, CLALLAM, JEFFERSON AND NORTH MASON COUNTIES. A TOTAL OF 104 NEW CLIENTS WERE SERVED WHILE THE VOLUNTEER AND PAID STAFF CONTINUED TO HANDLE THE CASES FROM PRIOR YEARS. THE ALL-VOLUNTEER LEGAL REPRESENTATIVES (EIGHT ACCREDITED WITH THREE MORE IN TRAINING) PROVIDED THESE SERVICES DESPITE THE LACK OF IMMIGRANT REFORM AND MEANINGFUL CHANGES IN NATIONAL IMMIGRATION POLICY. ROBUST COLLABORATIONS WITH THE NORTHWEST IMMIGRANT RIGHTS PROJECT, ONE AMERICA, JEFFERSON COUNTY IMMIGRANT RIGHTS ADVOCATES AND THE CATHOLIC LEGAL IMMIGRATION NETWORK CONTINUED.THE LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM ALSO ASSISTED 140 IMMIGRANTS WHO WERE SEEKING TO MEET THEIR CIVIC AND LEGAL OBLIGATIONS TO FILE FEDERAL AND STATE TAX RETURNS. THREE VOLUNTEERS HELPED CLIENTS FILE ITIN APPLICATIONS AND FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURNS. FAMILY SERVICES PROGRAM: 2020 WAS DOMINATED BY SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY IN THE MIDST OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. IMMIGRANT FAMILIES LOST THEIR JOBS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN MARCH OF 2020, BUT THEY DID NOT ALL HAVE ACCESS TO UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS, STIMULUS CHECKS AND INFORMATION IN THEIR LANGUAGE LIKE MOST OTHERS. MANY PEOPLE FELT FEAR AROUND ACCEPTING ASSISTANCE OR DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT IT WAS AVAILABLE. WE DEDICATED OURSELVES TO GETTING OUT RELIABLE INFORMATION, AND MAKING RESOURCES ACCESSIBLE. WE CREATED AN EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FUND TO HELP WITH RENT AND FOOD NEEDS. WE PARTNERED WITH MULTIPLE LOCAL AGENCIES TO CONNECT PEOPLE TO RENT AND UTILITY RELIEF. WE PARTNERED WITH MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO OFFER COVID TESTING AND REFERRALS. WE ALSO DISTRIBUTED FOOD AND MASKS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS.IN ADDITION TO OUR PANDEMIC-SPECIFIC RESPONSE, WE CONTINUED MOST OF OUR OTHER SERVICES REMOTELY. WE ANSWERED THOUSANDS OF CALLS ABOUT HEALTHCARE BILLS, HOW TO GET AN ID CARD, HOW TO GET A SCHOOL COMPUTER OR INTERNET ACCESS, RENTERS RIGHTS, PRENATAL CARE, CAR INSURANCE, DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS, FAMILY LAW REFERRALS, AND MANY MORE EVERY DAY SITUATIONS. WE CONTINUED OUR CLOTHING CLOSET WITH COVID PRECAUTIONS. WE BEGAN A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES DIAPERS AND OTHER NECESSITIES TO CHILDREN 0-5 YEARS OLD AND RECRUITED VOLUNTEERS TO DO WEEKLY DELIVERIES OF THESE ITEMS TO FAMILIES IN NEED. WE DID A HOLIDAY BUNDLE DISTRIBUTION TO OVER 200 FAMILIES, WITH GROCERY STAPLES, TOYS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, HYGIENE ITEMS AND FESTIVE TREATS. WE SAW OUR VOLUNTEERS STEP UP IN NEW WAYS, INCLUDING MANY OF OUR TEENAGE VOLUNTEERS. OUR CLOTHING CLOSET IS RUN MOSTLY BY OUR CLIENT-VOLUNTEERS. WE RELIED ON MANY VOLUNTEERS TO WORK FROM HOME AND THEY WERE HAPPY TO DO SO AND LEARN AND BE FLEXIBLE. WE WERE GRATEFUL FOR NUMEROUS IMMIGRANT VOLUNTEER INTERPRETERS FOR MANY SERVICES.WE SERVED WELL OVER 400 FAMILIES IN 2020.
