Write on Sports Summer Session
Write on Sports is a non-profit literacy initiative aimed at inspiring students to strengthen their writing skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence by tapping into a topic of interest: sports. We define sports broadly to include sports students play or watch, as well as the intersection of sports with topics like fashion, music and societal issues with the goal of providing many access points for students to find their interest. The WoS summer program is a two or three week intensive program which features several guest events as well as a trip to a sporting event or venue. For the video project, students are afforded more time and flexibility for their project, including the option of different video structures or podcasting. A foundational project of the summer program is a written feature story. For this project, students select a topic of interest, research that topic to understand it from multiple perspectives, identify a structure that makes sense for their story, outline their ideas, and write multiple drafts over the course of the program. Students’ final drafts are combined into a program magazine that is named by that group of students.Geographies1 Normal Ave, Montclair, NJ 07043, USA;400 Cedar Ave, West Long Branch, NJ 07764, USA;890 Auraria Pkwy, Denver, CO 80204, USA;1700 S Main St, Goshen, IN 46526, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedLiterature and writing,College preparation,Middle school education,Youth peer mentoring,Audio recording,Mobile mediaAdolescents,Preteens,Ethnic and racial groups,Heterosexuals,LGBTQ people,Adolescent boys,Preteen boys,Adolescent girls,Preteen girls––Write on Arts Summer Session
Write on Arts (WoA) is a non-profit literacy initiative launched in 2024 and aimed at inspiring students to strengthen their writing skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence by tapping into a topic of interest: the arts. Similar to how we have historically defined sports broadly (in our Write on Sports program) to capture students' interest, we take an expansive approach to the arts to include theater, music, fine arts, and culture. WoA follows the same curricular philosophy as WoS, including interest-based print and video projects, authentic learning experiences through guest events, and individualized support for students through a low student/teacher ratio. The Write on Arts curriculum philosophy focuses on cultivating an appreciation of art while equipping students with the tools and confidence to engage critically with diverse art forms. In Write on Arts, we approach each of our programs by individualizing our instruction based on students’ interests and abilities, allowing each student to benefit from the program and grow as a writer and a learner. Through our program, students learn and practice the skills of asking probing questions, using evidence to support their ideas, and revising their work. Ultimately, our goal is to inspire a passion for the arts and to empower students to engage with art as active participants and thoughtful critics.Geographies1 Normal Ave, Montclair, NJ 07043, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedArts education,Art history,Literature and writing,Art museums,Performing arts,Visual arts,College preparation,Out-of-school learning,Middle school education,Creative Youth Development,Youth peer mentoring,Audio recording,Mobile media,Publishing,Web-based mediaAdolescents,Preteens,Ethnic and racial groups,Heterosexuals,Intersex people,LGBTQ people,Adolescent boys,Preteen boys,Adolescent girls,Preteen girls––
