Program 1 [2020]
Operate a year-round indoor farmers market store stocked with healthy, affordable food and food products sold on consignment for local farmers and food producers directly to Lower Manhattan community members. The indoor Fulton Stall Market operated continuously during 2020 despite the challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic (six days a week beginning in March, 2020), providing the Lower Manhattan community with access to a wide variety of fresh and processed local food products from 100+ local farmers and small-scale independent food producers from New York and adjacent states. In March, 2020 the market was designated an essential business by NYS which enabled it to operate in compliance with CDC, NYS, and NYC COVID 19 health protocols to provide safe, convenient access for local residents and workers to fresh, high-quality local foods sold retail and through its weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) purchasing program that provides the security of pre-ordered 12-week farm shares of local vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheese, meats, poultry, fish, bread, soup, and other staple foods from local farmers and producers. As a result, the market generated crucial income for its participating farmers and producers that helped offset their economic losses from other market channels due to the COVID 19 pandemic, while generating for them a significant higher economic return than would be possible through conventional retail food stores. Number of persons benefited: 100+ local farmers and food producers; 100+ local families participating in the CSA program; estimated 2,500 community residents, workers and visitors served by the indoor farmers market and CSA during the COVID 19 pandemic.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$17.1KProgram 2 [2020]
Provide healthy local fresh produce from Fulton Stall Market farmers to low-income families in the community affected by the COVID 19 pandemic to enhance their nutritional well-being. Normally the Fulton Stall Market presents workshops for public school classes and families with children in the community describing the history, use, and benefits of locally grown fresh produce. These include Meet the Farmer, Photographer, and Chef workshops for NYC public school classes and Look Whos Cooking workshops for local families with young children to introduce them to preparing healthy meals using locally grown fresh seasonal produce and simple, healthy cooking methods. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, these group programs were cancelled, and NYC Council funding awarded to the Fulton Market Association through the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the NYC Department for the Aging for educational workshops was redirected to providing locally grown fresh produce from participating farmers to benefit homebound Seniors in the Two Bridges neighborhood near the Seaport District. In addition, fresh local produce from participating farmers was provided as an incentive to public housing residents at the NYC Housing Authoritys Alfred E. Smith Houses in Two Bridges to participate in the 2020 US Census with funds from a community group. Number of persons benefited: 1,000 consumers (800 Senior households and 100 public housing households)GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$12.2KProgram 3 [2020]
Develop and operate an enhanced Fulton Stall Market website that enables community members to learn about the markets farmers and producers and their local farm and food products, order products online from the farmers or producers, visit agritourism destinations and see educational videos on local food and entrepreneurial success stories.Federal grant funds awarded by U.S Department of Agricultures Agricultural Marketing Service under the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP), were used to enhance the markets website to enable COVID 19-bound customers in Lower Manhattan and the general public to connect online with the markets farmers and producers to compensate for loss of the outdoor market and reduced public contact with farmers and producers in the indoor market and at regular workshops. A webpage for each farmer producers was produced to provide information on the farm or business, photos and videos, and links to online purchasing. The funding also enabled the production of original videos posted on the site with market producers conducting educational presentations on local food topics.(Normally, Fulton Stall Market operates a weekly outdoor farmers market from May to Thanksgiving providing an average of 15-20 local farmers and small-scale independent food producers each week with a low-cost, high visibility, direct sales outlet for their products, and enabling some to take the first step in launching a new food business. This outdoor market normally offers lower Manhattan residents, workers and visitors an attractive weekend destination to discover, sample, and purchase a variety of locally grown and produced specialty food products directly from producers. It brings colorful activity, foot traffic, and vibrancy to the historic Seaport area while directing shoppers to the indoor Fulton Stall Market across the street where farmers and producers products are available daily year-round. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic and its effect in greatly reducing resident and worker pedestrian foot traffic and eliminating tourism foot traffic in the Seaport District during 2020, the 2020 outdoor farmers market was canceled.)Number of persons benefited: 100 farmers and small-scale independent food producers from NY and adjacent states over the course of the year; estimated 5,000 website visitors.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$7.5K
